Tinagero Family

On January 25, 2002, I returned from Puerto Rico after spending 18 days researching. Just before Thanksgiving, I received a letter from Else Zayas Leon, the archivist at Archivo Historico Arquidiocesano in San Juan. She had come across a document in Spain, in which Gabriel Tinagero was most anxious to leave Spain for Puerto Rico and begin his new job as Treasurer in 1774. This trip, I was hoping to find documentation specifying the relationship between Gabriel and Grandpa's Grandfather, Ramon Tinagero. Else believes that Gabriel is Ramon's father. Ramon's church death record doesn't specify his parents. Unfortunately, Humacao's marriage book for the early 1800s is damaged and unreadable at times. Ramon and Maria Josefa Fernandez did not get married in San Juan. Ramon was not born in San Juan, as his military record indicates. However, I do have an 1891 civil birth registration in which Ramon Tinagero Fernandez (Grandpa's father) states his father was from Guaynabo. I will be sending a letter to the church in Guaynabo and request his baptism/birth record. Another potential source of Ramon's parents, may be on a legal document when he applied for a license for his passport in order to change his residency from Humacao to San Juan in 1823. In 1823, Ramon is in Humacao with Gabriel's son, Pedro Josef and his daughter, Maria Josefa Tinagero. I will let everyone know when I establish a definitive relationship. Grandpa wasn't kidding when he said we come from a "good family!"

The best research find this trip was at the University of PR in Rio Piedras. The Directory of Industry and Commerce for 1894, had a listing for the Tinagero family business and included an advertisement. It's listed as Juan E. Tinagero under Agentes De Negocios, Business Agents. I've enclosed a copy of the advertisment, which lists the services that they provided. The english translation of the ad is in the family printout that is also enclosed. The business was located at 3 Calle Cristo in Old San Juan.

In another book, I found Nanny's Grandfather, Valentin Pereira. In 1893, He had a tobacco shop on Calle Luna, in Old San Juan. The 1914 rooster of civil service officers and employees, had Grandpa's brother, Eloy. He was a messenger for the Insular Telegraph company.

At San Francisco De Asis church, I found Nanny's baptism. This church is several blocks from the San Juan Cathedral in Old San Juan. I also found the baptism of Ramon Tinagero Feijoo, Ramon Tinagero Fernandez's son from his second marriage. Ramon's son had a small book of poetry published, "Flores Silvestres" (Wild Flowers). I'm currently translating them into english and will send one with the next update.
