Descendants of John Tippett I

Generation No. 1

1. JOHN1 TIPPETT I was born Abt. 1740, and died 1796 in Rowan Co., NC. He married SUSANNAH (MAIDEN NAME UNKNOWN).

Notes for J
OHN TIPPETT I:
The first State census of North Carolina was taken from 1784-1787. At that time Tippett families wer residents of Jones, Halifax and Granville Counties. The Erasmus and Erastus L. Tippett families were residents of Halifax County. They were the twin sons of Philip Tippett who died in 1772. In Jones County, William, John and their father, James Tippett, had established their homes. There was only one Tippett family in Granville County when the State census was taken in 1785, that of John Tippett. It consisted of one white male between 21 and 60 years of age, evidentally John Tippett, born between 1725 and 1764 (probably about 1740), four white males under the age of 21 (born after 1763), and five white females. He owned 346 acres of land and one slave in 1788. (STATE CENSUS OF NORTH CAROLINA 1784-1787, Granville County, p. 41; THE STATE RECORDS OF NORTH CAROLINA, Vol.26, p. 1273, Walter Clark, editor)

On December 9, 1787 John Tippett purchased a 96 acre tract of land in Granville County from William Cook for 40 pounds. (Granville Co. Deed Book O, p. 556) He later sold this land to his son Luke and an additional 145 acres on the Tar River to his son John, Jr., though no record of the original purchase of this latter parcel has been found.

The family settled in Rowan County, North Carolina before 1795 on the "north side of Beaver Dam Creek ... on Davis Creek near Rich Mountain ..." This land was a grant from the State of North Carolina to Allen Surrat who conveyed it to John Tippett. After his death in 1796, a judgement was filed against his heirs for 37 pounds. The land (380 acres) was sold at public auction by Nathan Chaffin, High Sheriff of Rowan County, to the highest bidder, Evan Alexander, on February 9, 1798. (Rowan Co. Deed Book 16, pp. 530-532) This area of Rowan County became Davidson County in 1822. It is east of Salisbury and south of Lexington, North Carolina in the Alleghany Township.

A marriage bond for Luke Tippett and Mary Vincent was issued on December 27, 1792 in Granville County. He and his family remained on the homestead in Granville Co. which he had purchased from his father on January 18, 1796. "... John Tippett of Rowan County, North Carolina ... to Luke Tippett of Granville County, a tract or parcel of land lying in Granville County, in the aforesaid State ... containing 96 acres ..." for 40 pounds. (Granville Co. Deed Book P, p. 320)

On January 26, 1795, John Tippett, Sr. of Rowan County gave his son, John Tippett, Jr., also of Rowan County, power of attorney to care for all his personal affairs. (Rowan Co. Deed Book 3, pp. 180, 181) On July 13, 1795 John Tippett, Jr. purchased land in Granville County from his father: "... John Tippett, Sr. of Rowan County ... to John Tippett, Jr. of Granville Co., a parcel of land lying in Granville County ... on the waters of the Tar River ... containing 145 acres ..." for 50 pounds. (Granville Co. Deed Book Q, p. 60)

The will of John Tippett is dated May 26, 1796 and proved during the August Term of Court 1796. Named as issues were his wife, Susannah, their four sons, John, Luke, Thomas and William, and their four daughters, Sarah, Nancy, Elizabeth and Susannah. (This agrees with the family make up as recorded in the State census of Granville Co. and the real estate transactions mentioned above.)

When the Federal census was completed in 1800, John Tippett's wife Susannah was named as head of the household and still a resident of Rowan County, along with two of her children --- one son born beetween 1774-1784 (Thomas who was between 16 and 26 years old), and one daughter who was between 16 and 26 years of age.

William married Rebecca Mills, daughter of George and Annie Mills, on March 3, 1796 and had his household in Rowan County. In 1800 it was composed of himself, his wife, two males under 10 years of age (born between 1790 and 1800) and two females (one under 10 and the other between 10 and 16 years of age). However, in that same census, sons John and Luke, wih their families, are shown to be residents of Granville County living on adjoining properties. They both appear on the tax lists from 1803-1805. (LIST OF TAXABLES, Ledge of Rock District)

Luke's estate contained nearly 200 acres of land --- the 96 acres he had purchased from his father, and an additional 100 acres on Cedar Creek that he bought for 50 pounds on November 29, 1798. (Granville Co. Deed Book Q, p. 236) In addition to himself and his wife, Luke Tippett's household included three males, two born between 1790 and 1800 (under 10 years of age) and one born between 1784 and 1800 (10 to 16 years old), and two females less than 10 years old. It appears that he died before 1806 because he does not appear on the tax list for that year, but his brother John does.

It seems that all of John Tippett's sons were born between 1764 and 1775, based on the fact that they were all under 21 in 1785 when the State census was taken, but had reached maturity by 1796 when their father died. (State Census of North Carolina 1784-1787, p. 41 and John Tippett's will, 1796, Rowan Co.) It is possible that John Tippett's name was Jonathan W. Tippett. His grandson John Tippett, Jr. (who was the son of John Tippett's son John, Jr.) moved to Tennessee and public records there refer to him as Jonathan W. Tippit. His descendants have accepted "TIPPIT" as the correct spelling of the surname. John Jr. is also referred to as J. W. Tippett in Granville Co. Deed Book Q.
