The Tippetts and many of their allied families were among those who arrived early in this country. My paternal great-grandmother, Cassandra Mayson Wilder Tippett, was a direct descendant of Edward Wilder (1614-1687). He and his wife, Ann, were the first of that family name to appear in the Colonial records of Virginia. Edward was probably the great-grandson of Nicholas Wylder who came to England from Normandy during the Norman Invasion in 1485. My paternal great-great-grandmother, Eliza Ann Hinton Tippett, was a descendant of the Hyntons of Berkshire, England. This family can be traced back as early as 1086 and the reign of William the Conqueror.

It appears that the Tippetts of North Carolina descend from four family lines, perhaps all related:

(1) JOHN TIPPETT was a resident of Granville Co., NC when the first State Census was taken in 1785 and when the first Federal Census was taken in 1790. He moved his family to Rowan Co., NC before 1795, and died there in 1796. John's grandson, WILLIAM T. TIPPETT, JR. moved his family to Hopkins Co., Kentucky in the fall or winter of 1857. He, his wife, and 14 of their children arrived in two covered wagons pulled by oxen. The trip had taken nearly 6 weeks, coming through the Cumberland Gap, and traveling no more than 20 miles a day. John's three grandsons, EZEKIEL, JOHN, and JAMES C. TIPPETT moved to Tennessee. Their descendants spell their name, TIPPITT, TIPPIT, and TIPPETT, respectively.

(2) JONATHAN TIPPETT of Granville Co., NC. A marriage bond was issued on October 13, 1798 for his marriage to Mary Wade. His first appearance in North Carolina as head of household was in 1800. He died intestate, but the final settlement of his estate was in August 1841,

(3) JOHN TIPPETT was a resident of Craven Co., NC in 1740 (a part of which became Jones Co. in 1779), and

(4) PHILIP TIPPETT whose will was probated in May 1772 and registered in Halifax Co., NC. He was the grandson of Philip Tippett of St. Mary's Co., Maryland, who arrived in the Colony on April 28, 1681 and died there in 1706. Many of his descendants moved to Tennessee, Texas and other states across the country. In some cases the name became TIPPIT.

In addition to HINTON and WILDER, some of the other allied families being researched are PERRY, GAY, CAUDLE, CARPENTER, and CORBETT.

I am indebited to many people for the information and pictures that will appear here. Foremost are family members who have contributed many pictures and a storehouse of information. Some of them are no longer with us, but their loving memories remain in our hearts and minds.

I also thank Daphine Tippett Hare of Oxford, NC; Harold Milford of San Antonio, TX; Aubrey W. Tippitt of Memphis, TN; Bonnie Ligon of Layton, UT; Charles Hinton of Satellite Beach, FL; Ruby Tippit Peacher of Indian Mound, TN; Bobbi Tibbett Lionetti of Orlando, FL; Gary Corbett of Dallas, TX; Trish Gorman of Concord, NC; Lynne Brown of Elko, NV; Natalie Mercer of Madisonville, KY, Pam Graham of Waterford, MI., and Linda Parrish Glasgow of Vienna, VA. Your generous contributions, and the contributions of others not mentioned, are deeply appreciated.
