Franklin D. Tipton 2537 Gary Lane Waco,TX 76708 254-753-8283 | I am researching several families including the Tipton family. I have been able to research my great grandfather Phylander Slay Tipton, born 9-1-1828 in Maryland and died 6-16-1909. The Book "We Tipton's and our Kin" by Ervin Charles Tipton, states that his father was William Tipton of Upshur County Texas who died prior to 6-19-1855 and was survived by his widowMary Stallings Tipton. The 1850 Census for Upshur Co. shows William Tipton and Wife M. Tipton and 5 children. The child which would have been my grandfather is listed as F.S. Tipton, age 22, and female. Phylander was sometimes spelled as Filander, and as Philander, so the initials aren't a large problem, but being listed as female seems to be somewhat of a reach.I would like to find documentation toprove William Tipton and Mary Stallings Tipton were Philander Slay Tipton's parents. The 1930 Maryland Census, for Allegeny County, show them with a son under the age of 5 which indicates that Phylander was their son as he was 2yrs of age in 1930. Phylander usually used the name P.S Tipton, and his first wife was Margaret Elenor Pewthers. They were married in Collin Co., TX 9-15-1857.The marriage license shows him as Philander.I have no idea who her parents were. Census records show she was born in Ohio. I have looked at Ohio records and I cannot connect her to any of the Pewthers who lived there.Any help would be appreciated, as she is my great grandmother. Other families being researched include mywife's grandfather, Israel P. "Bud" Pickens who was born in Clarke County Alabama 12-24-1857 to "Andy" Pickens and Annie or Anna Pickens. The 1860 Census for Clarke County Alabama show Annaas head of family with children Sarah J, age 6, Anna age 4, Margaret age 8 months, William age 8, and Israel age 4. We cannot trace Anna past the 1860 Census, and we assume Andy must have died pror to the Census about 1859. Did Anna Pickens remarry and if so to whom.It is believed that Anna and all the children except for Sarah Jane and Israel may have died of some disease. We believe her maiden name may have been Miller as there was a marriage of A.J. Pickens and Ann Miller 12-02-1851 in Clarke County Alabama. Israel P. Pickens was married to his first wife Mary Ann Simmons in Indian Territory,8-10-1882 based on 2'd wife's bible info. We need help in researching Mary Ann Simmons who was born 8-27-1861. Was she full blood Cherokee or perhaps 1/2 Cherokee as is commonly believed by some of her decendants? Also how did Israel P. Pickens grow up. There is rumor that the children were orphans. We know eventually both Israel and Sarah Jane Pickens Hobbs Nichuls both lived in Texas. How did they get there? What happened to the other children? |
