The Titus Family Descended From Joseph Titus (cir1850-1912)

Updated July 25, 2006

Joseph Titus arrived in Bangalore somewhere around 1895 after retiring as the Head of Hoori's College, one of the first Christian establishments in Vellore, a part of Arcot District (made famous no doubt by the exploits of the interprid Sir Robert Clive). Vellore was a part of the then Madras Presidency.
Joseph Titus quickly established himself as a member of the educated Indian society in Bangalore and even served as a lay preacher at the Wesley Tamil Church in Haines Road. My father once mentioned an anectdote where Mr Joseph Titus was assigned the task of announced the passing of King George from the pulpit of the church.
Joseph Titus was well recieved by the British as well, as is borne out by the fact that he moved from a modest home off Petigrew Street near Coles Park to a sprawling mansion measuring nearly 20,000 sq. ft which he acquired from an Englishman called Mr Darling.
No 32, St. Johns Church Road soon became the hub of a thriving Horse and Carriage Business. Joseph Titus bought these from the Palace of the Maharaja of Mysore and deployed them for the convenience of both the British and Indian gentry.
Joseph Titus sired thirteen children in all.
The Titus generation outlined in this web site are the direct descendants of Joseph Titus and his second wife Mariammal.
