NICHOLAS THEVENIN AND HIS DESCENDANTS

Generation No. 2

       2. Francis Collin2 Thevenin , Sr (Nicholas1) was born 25 Feb 1792 in Gallipolis, Gallia Co. Oh, and died 22 Jan 1893 in Gallia Co. Oh.. He married Mary Ann White Abt. 1826 in Gallia Co. Oh., daughter of John White and Matilda.

Notes for Francis Collin Thevenin , Sr:
GALLIPOLIS TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER, dtd. 25 Jan 1893.
"Mr. Collin Thevenin died at the residence of Robert Harrison near Yellow Town, aged 101 years. He was the son of Nicholas Thevenin, one of the French setters of ancient Gallipolis. Mr. Thevenin was perhaps the oldest resident of Gallia County. His funeral services took place Monday."

GALLIPOLIS TRIBUNE NEWSPAPER, dtd. Feb. 1893 Roll #25847. from Columbus Ohio Historical Society.
"Collin Thevenin living near Yellow Town termininated this life, Sunday Jan. 22nd. 1893, at the great age of 101 years. He died at the residence of Robt. Harrison, where he had made his home for several years. He had a home of his own up to a short time before his death near the place where he died, which he sold. He left children as follows: Collin, James, Robert, Absalom, Taylor, Mrs Thomas Dale and Mrs. A. Shults living on Kanawha. Mrs. Thevenin died several years ago in the neighborhood of 75 years of age.
Rev. Jesse Ingles, from whom we gather these facts says he attended the wedding of Mr. & Mrs. Thevenin when he was 16 years of age. At that time Mr. Thevenin was 36 years old and Mr. Ingels is now 81 year. He lived in sight of Mr. Thevenin's home for forty or more years. He describes Mr. Thevenin as a man who never made much display in the world, impulsive, but soon over it. He was of small stature, not weighing over 135 pounds. He was industrious and of good habits. He never accumulated a great deal but made a good living. His education was limited, but he stood well among his nieghbors. He had a son who died in the war-John- and for whose loss he drew a pension of $12.00 per month. As for himself he was very hearty and rugged. He came here from the French Grant, and was a miller and farmer. He was a great fisherman and for twenty years fished half of his time. Once when he was fishing a man accidentally shot him through the arm, but he kept on fishing. This happened on Mr. Ingels' place. He was very successful as a fisherman. He used tabacco all of his life. He attended every election but for the past six years went about very little. He was first a whig and then a Republican and rampant in politics. He was liked to hunt to some extent, but fishing was his strong hold for pastime. Mr. Ingels has the gun that Mr. Thevenin had made when he was a boy. He was very courageous and was afraid of nothing, and would fight at the drop of a hat. He was laid to rest in the Harrison graveyard close to where he had lived, his greatest honor in this life being his long alloted years, which though uneventful seemed to have been pleasantly spent."
APPLICATION FOR LETTERS OF GUARDIANSHIP, STATE OF OHIO, GALLIA COUNTY.
In probate court February 4, 1889. Robert Harrison appointed guardian for Collin Thevenin, Imbecile about age 95 years. The property and estate of said Imbecile as nearly as can be ascertained, is as follows: Personal property consisting of $125.00 of pension to him coming and twelve dollars per month hereafter. No Real Estate. A bond of $500.00. Address Thivener, Ohio. (Note: This Robert Harrison is probably the great grandson of Collin. His daughter, Phoebe Thevenin, wife of Grandville Leach, had a daughter, Louisa Leach who married Simeon Harrison. It must be understood that inthis time period the word "Imbecile" was to discribe the mental age of Collin...today it is referred to as "Senility".)

Story told by Collin's grandson, Stephen Jasper Thevenin...Grandfather
was fishing and a friend shot him though the arm. The friend ran toward Collin, shouting "Are you alright?". Collin never stopped fishing, just told the man, "I am alright, but you had better be more careful, you could hurt somebody".
Francis "Collin" Thevenin went to the Court 12 May 1853 to place a claim against his father's estate. Listed in the complaint was a claim for clear title on land, that his father had sold to him, but never produced a title. He stted he had paid Nicholas (his father) for a certain tract or parcel of land containing 66 acres more or less laying and being situated in the North East part of the South West Quarter and the South East part of the North West quarter of Sec. No.19 of Township 5, Range 15 in the Ohio company Purchase in Gallipolis Co. He had paid the sum of $200.00 in the year 1841 but never received a transfer of the title.
He also requested money due to him, for labor performed by him and goods sold to Nicholas from him, for said, Nicholas Thevenin. The total sum asked for by Collin was $400.00. the court awarded to Collin the sum of #363.00, plus Mary Thevein the administratix pay the said court cost of $20.79. (No will for Nicholas has been found..he had very little property in his estated, there is no record that Collin received anything from his father's estate - except the above award-but on the bottom of the listing of debts due from Nicholas's estate-it said they were uncollectable. When his wife Mary (Loucks) Thevenin died she left most everything to her daugthers, by Nicholas and her grandchildren by her daughters.)

Francis Collin Thevenin, Sr., always signed his name as Collin Thevenin. For many generations no one knew his name was Francis Collin, Sr.
We know he was Francis Collin Sr. due to a Deed dated 21 January 1864 between Francis Collin Thevenin, Jr. and James C. Bane, both of Gallia Co. Ohio.
