My grandparents, Simon Potolski (Podolski) and Rosina Seiler, were born in Apatin, Bacs Bodrog, Hungary in the 1870's. They married there, began their family there and in 1910 emigrated to the United States. Their families were part of the great Donauschwaben migration of the 1700's wherein the Hapsburg monarchy sought to repopulate their territories in southern and eastern Hungary after the Turks had been driven out. They settled in Apatin, though some branches of their families settled in Filipovo and Bacs Brestowatz. Their families came from villages in Lothringen, Baden-Wurttemberg, Rhineland-Pfalz, and other parts of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The pre-Apatin origin of the Podolskis is unknown at this time with Silesia as just one of several possibilities. |
