Am currently researching the Maeland(Maland), Brekke/Tunold, Midthun family tree. Maeland/ Brekke line of ancestors date back to the 1500's in Stryn, Nordfjord, Norway. The families established farm homesteads with their respective family names. The name Maeland is derived from "Medalland", which means "middle land" because the Maeland farm was located between the Bersta and Dispa farms. Perhaps these three farms were originally one farm and were later divided into three parcels. The first record of the Maeland farm dates back to 1585. Klemet Maeland was the first Maeland to own the property. He purchased the farm in 1640, so the Maeland farm has been in the Maeland family for over three hundred years. It was on this farm that one John Johnson Maeland was born in 1831.* I have started my research with John J. Maeland, as this is where Rev. R.J. Maeland (son to John J. Maeland) began the book of my ancestors. This book has been passed down to me from my grandmother, Dora Arvilla Brekke, half grandniece to John J. Maeland's wife, Mari nee Brekke. I would appreciate any information that can help me to extend these family lines. Don't hesitate to contact me. If you believe that I may have some information that you could use, please feel free to use it, or contact me. **PLEASE NOTE:Oline Tunold married twice: first to Anders Magneson Brekke, then to Rasmus Berge ( who later changed his last name to Brekke, upon marriage to Oline)....hence this is where the Brekke line of our family splits into two sets of Brekke's. *The John J.
