A Letter from Mr. John A. Tomberlin

Abba, Georgia

April 25, 1928

Dear Chronicle,

I like for you to come, as I see and hear from your columns so much of my old county, Wilcox.

….up there Thursday and see and hear the memorial services of the day, but my physical strength will not allow me to make the trip.

I remember two among the oldest men of Wilcox County today, is Geo. F. McCleod and Norman Statham.  McCleod, about 86 or 87, and Statham 101 or 102 years old.  I myself … their ages and I reckon I am about right.  They were the first two men in Wilcox County to join the Confederate Army.  They belonged to the 8th Georgia regiment, which was one of the noted regiments in the Confederate service from first to last.

In 1861, Capt. Land made up the first company from the county.  They made company H of the 10th Georgia regiment.  I think the company left Abbeville with about 90 members.  How many lived through the war, I don’t know, and if there is any of the company living today, I don’t know it.  The 10th Georgia regiment done some good and hard fighting, and was noted as a strong regiment.

In 1862, Capt. S. D. Fuller made up a second regiment in Wilcox County, numbering from first to last 146 men and I was one of the members.  In this company was a company … of 49th Georgia Regiment, both companies followed Lee and Jackson in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania.  If there is another one of the company living besides myself, I don’t know it or who he is.  The old 49th regiment began its fighting at Seven Pines and ended with Lee at Appatamox, 9th April, 1865.

I was made a prisoner the 25th of March, 1865 in front of Petersburg, Virginia and carried to Point Lookout, Maryland and was turned lose on the 14th day of June, 1865 and got home the 5th day of July.

The Lord was with me in all the troubles, worries, and dangers of war and brought me safe back home.  I am now 85 years old and he is still blessing me.  I have been married three times.  I have raised two families of children and now have the third family.  I joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1865, and was soon made a working deacon and I was soon ordained to the ministry and am still praising his holy name for all his benefits unto me.
