Generation No. 1

1. JOHN2 TOMBERLIN (JOHN WILLIAM1) was born 1774 in South Carolina, and died March 26, 1854 in Irwin County, Georgia. He married (1) ELIZABETH ANDREWS 1802 in Burke County, Georgia, daughter of WILLIAM ANDREWS and ANNA. She was born 1782 in Burke County, Georgia, and died 1845 in Irwin County, Georgia. He married (2) ANN MUSGROVES December 21, 1848 in Irwin County, Georgia.

Notes for J
OHN TOMBERLIN:
The parents of John Tomberlin (1774-1854) of Irwin County, Georgia are difficult to substantiate. According to family histories and tradition from the late 19th and early 20th century, the father of John Tomberlin was Moses Tomberlin of North Carolina. Folks Huxford, author of "Pioneers of Wiregrass Georgia" list the father of John Tomberlin as William. This is almost certainly incorrect. The William Tomberlin of which Huxford speaks, living in Appling County according to the 1820 US Census, was probably a brother, or other relative.

There was a John Tomberlin during and after the American Revolution living in Georgia that seems to fit the necessary profile. He served in the Revolution and was granted bounty land in Washington County in 1784. Martha T. Walls in her book "Our Tomberlin Heritage" list John Tomberlin, Sr. (or John William Tomberlin) as the father of John Tomberlin. While this does seem to be the most likely answer, I find it hard to ignore the family tradition and history of earlier members of the Tomberlin family. Maybe John Tomberlin Sr. was nicknamed Moses. In any event we cannot be absolutely certain as to John Tomberlin's (1774-1854) parentage.

Notes for N
ANCY TOMBERLIN:
Follow story from "Pioneer Day Along the Ocmulgee"

One day while Joshua was away on an Indian pursuit, Nancy glanced out her cabin door and saw a party of Indians approaching in single file. Because of the problems between the early pioneer settlers and the Indians, Nancy expected that she and her children might be killed. But in the face of danger, her pioneer spirit rose to the occasion. She met her visitors at the door and invited them in for a meal. The Indians ate heartily. After they ate, they went into the yard and began to dance. From their gestures, Nancy was made to understand that the dance was a token of their appreciation for her hospitality. At the conclusion of the dance, the Indians left peacefully.
