Notes for MATTHEW TOMLIN:
There is no absolute proof of just how the Gloucester, New Jersey Tomlins are connected to the Illinois Tomlins but it seems fairly certain, through records of wills, deeds etc. , that the Illinois branch is descended from Matthew through son John, the father of William. Matthew and Elizabeth had two sons; John, who had three sons, and Matthew Jr. who also had three sons. Matthew'swill is in Trenton NJ book 23, page 322. Matthew also bought of Mary Wilson, 200 acres in Gloucester on June 5, 1728, in deed book BB339-Gloucester. The deed for his burial plots are on file at the Gloucester Co. Courthouse. Matthew's grave is plainly marked and is located at the Tomlin cemetery near Jefferson, N.J.
It is said that Matthew was Scottish and that Elizabeth, his wife, was German, and that they took up a claim from the English Government, eight square miles near Barnsboro (Sewell) and Mullica Hill, N.J. Another Authority says Tomlin was born in England, then raised in Scotland
Surveyor General's Office, Burlington, N.J. in book R, page 22, Joseph Cooper sold 150 Acres to Matthew Tomlin, June 7, 1737. Then Matthew sells to Samuel Tomlin, Nov. 2, 1778, 18 Acresat Greenwich, near what is now Mickelton Clarksboro and was once called Greenwich Township, Gloucester County N.J.. Gloucester Co. records show that 81 Acres were sold to Matthew Tomlin April 1, 1761.Twp of Greenwich. And 51 Acres to him on April 9, 1761.Matthew owned and managed a very large plantation, and as was common for the time, was an owner of slaves. One paragraph in his will states, " I do hereby manumate free and forever discharge my Negro Ben from being any longer a slave to me or my heirs, paying into the hands of my executer the sum of four pounds per year as long as he is capable of doing a mans work for the use of his support provided he should become incapable of providing for himself a livlihood [sic] which said money shall be put to no other use but the sole and only use of the said Ben,and I give Ben his bed and bedding that he commonly lies on."
Notes for ELIZABETH TOMLINS:
Believed to be of German descent. She was buried next to her husband, Mathew in the Tomlin Cemetery, Jefferson, N.J. The headstone reads " Here Lyeth the body of Elizabeth Tomlin, August 20, 1755 "
