Notes for Lettie Caroline Hungate: 1934 Rites held Monday for Mrs E. A. Tucker (Lettie) Services conducted at Ivan Street Home: Interment at Blair, NE
Lettie C. Hungate was born October 20, 1861, near Blair,NE and passed away on August 23, 1934, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Archie M. Smith, in Pender, NE at the age of 72 years, 10 months and 3 days. She was the daughter of Thomas C. and Ann H. Hungate.
Christmas Day, 1879, she was married ton Eugene A. Tucker at Herman, NE. In the spring of 1884, before the town of Pender was started, this couple came to the Reservation and filed a homestead five miles west of Pender where they lived until 1892, when they sold the homestead and purchased a farm one mile west of Pender. This was their home the spring of 1918 when they retired and moved to Pender, and here the family has lived ever since.
To this union were born one daughter, Mittie (Mrs. Archie Smith) and five sons. Edward J. and Thomas A. of Spokane Washington, Erue L. and Ivan E. , of Rosetown, Sask. Canada and Neal H. Geneva NE. She is survived by all her children and by her husband and by her two brothers, Howard M. Hungate of Columbia, Missouri and Thomas W. Hungate of Ryder, North Dakota.
In her girlhood she united with the Baptist Church and remained a devoted member of that church until recent years when she affiliated with the Presbyterian Church of Pender. There being no Baptist Church in this city. She was a constant worker in the church: for six years she was president of the Ladies Guild, and during her incumbency of this office the mortgage was satisfied which represented the construction cost of the basement in this church. For many years she was a member of the women's Missionary Society and the Women's Christian Temperance Union, and teacher of a boys class and a girls class in the Sunday School.
She was a women of high ideals, a devoted wife and mother and one of the most highly respected citizens of this community. She experienced all of the hardships of pioneer life while developing their homestead.
The decedents and her husband celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Christmas Day, 1929, at their home in Pender, and on that occasion entertained many friends and relatives.
The sons, Erue and Ivan and Ivan's wife, having made their mother a three week visit last month, did not attend the funeral. All three of the other members of the immediate family were here for the last rites.
Rev. Thomas D. Arends had charge of the services. Mrs. Arends sang "Sun of MY Soul" and "Nearer My God to Thee" accompanied by Miss Dorothy Smith at the piano.
The pall bearers were Darrel Owens, Sterling Wenke, Richard Smith, Lester Buis, Charles J. Birch and Frank Pallas.
Out of town visitors included Mr. and Mrs. Clayton Adee, Allen: Mrs. Myrtle Smith, Chicago, IL; Mr and Mrs Adam L. Neuornborger, Wakefield; Mrs. B.H. Robinson, Omaha; Miss Harriet Jordan, Bancroft; and Mrs. W.C. Eddy, Lincoln.
Those who attended the funeral service at Pender and the burial services at Blair were Mrs. B.H. Robinson and Mrs. Edna Wagner of Omaha, sister and niece of decedent; Howard Richardson of Omaha, Miss Alice P. Birch, and Miss Rose Hinrichs, who had the care of the decedent for the past three months of her life, and the immediate family. R.F. Demme had charge of the funeral arrangements.
