In 1871, George was a servant, living in Ashby Parva in the household of Eliza Stevenson, widow and farmer of 116 acres, aged 56. Also present in the household were her daughter, Mary Ann Stevenson, aged 29; son John William Stevenson, aged 17; and another servant, William Weston, aged 22, who was born in Gilmorton, Leicestershire. Not named in the census was the '1 man' employed on the farm.
