Colonel John Thatcher (son of Anthony Thatcher and Elizabeth Jones) was born March 1638/39 in Marblehead, Ma, and died 1713 in Yarmouth. He married (1) Rebecca Winslow on 1661. He married (2) Lydia Gorham on 1683, daughter of John Gorham.

John was buried "Under Arms" in the Ancient cemetery. His stone, the first with the inscription to be erected in Yarmouth and was bought from England.

John was assistant to the Governor in1691, and a counselor in the province of Massachusetts Bay from 1692 to 1712, first
representative in 1692 for two years.

John and Lydia lived in what is now known as the 1689 house at Yarmouth. This house was built by Antony for his son John. The east wing contains the timbers of the first church of Yarmouth.
