Notes for H
EINRICH MUTERS:
Heinrich Muters and Marie Mueller
Heinrich was born in Neistad, Hanover Germany on September 1, 1821. He sailed from the port of Bremen, Germany on the ship, Florian and arrived in the United States on June 6, 1845 and settled near Cincinnati, Ohio. On June 1, 1846 at age twenty-four, he joined the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He served in Co. H. First Regiment, during the Mexican War and was stationed at Camp Belnap in Mexico. In august of 1846, during bad weather he had to wade through water up to his armpits. He became ill with a cold and was still further exposed to bad weather on a march to Saltillo, Mexico. Because of this, he developed a chronic case of conjunctivitis. He was discharged because of disability, due to this, on January 5, 1847 at a camp near Monterey, Mexico. After discharge, he returned home to Cincinnati Ohio. One military document described Henry as, five feet nine inches tall, having blond hair, a fair complexion, and blue eyes.
Marie Mueller was born in Neistad, Hanover Germany on April 13, 1826. She came to Cincinnati Ohio in about 1844. Marie and Heinrich were married on March 25, 1847 by August Kroell, Minister of the Gospel.
Heinrich and Marie lived in or near Cincinnati until about 1855, when they moved to Clayton county Iowa near Guttenberg. They had nine children: the first three, Henry, born November 11, 1849; William, born June 25, 1851; and John Henry born November 27, 1853, were born in Cincinnati, Ohio. Emelia, born December 30, 1855; George, born November 29, 1858; Alvina (Ella), born June 15, 1860; Augusta, born September 30, 1862; Pauline, born March 26, 1866; and Lena born May 4, 1869, were born in Iowa near Guttenberg.
In October of 1881, Heinrich, aged sixty, with his three oldest sons, Henry age thirty-two, William aged thirty, and John Henry age twenty-eight, went west to Dakota Territory. John Henry homesteaded a quarter section of land, a mile and a half south of Spencer, SD.
In the spring of 1882, they returned to Guttenberg to accompany their wives and children to Dakota Territory. The entire party coming to Dakota Territory included, Heinrich and Marie, their thirteen year old daughter Lena, their sons, and son's wives and grand children were as follows: Their oldest son, Henry, his wife Anna and their children, Henry Jr., George H., Fred, Lydia, Edward and Agusta; their second son William, his wife, Mary Clefisch and their daughter Lena; their third son, John Henry, his wife Mary Peppmuller, their son George Henry, and their daughter Louisa, a total of eighteen people. Most of them lived out their lives near Spencer. Most of them are buried in the cemetery south of Spencer; some relatives are buried in the Lakeside cemetery, west of Spencer.

Emelia Muters 1855 - 1857
Emelia Muters, born December 30, 1855 was the fourth child of Heinrich and Marie and their first daughter. She was probably born near Guttenberg in Clayton county Iowa, as the family moved to that area in 1855. Emelia died on December 19, 1857, just 11 days before her second birthday. She is most likely buried near Guttenberg.

George Muters 1858 - 1877
George Muters the fourth son of Heinrich and Marie was born on November 29, 1858 near Guttenberg, Iowa. He was the first of three George Muters. He died on January 2, 1877 at age 19, when the family still lived near Guttenberg.
It is assumed that he is buried at Guttenberg. Two of his brothers named sons after him.
Heinrich's oldest son Henry Muters Sr. had a son George H. Muters who was born in 1867. He was married to Delia Posey. George H. Muters worked in Tyndall, South Dakota and died on May 1, 1932.
Heinrich's third son John Henry Muters named his oldest son, George Henry Muters. This George Henry was born on August 14, 1875 in Guttenberg, Iowa. He was married to Mina Davis, and had three children, Kenneth, Lila, and Ora. George died on February 14, 1923 in a car accident that occurred while he was driving his mail route.

            Agusta Muters and John Jungers
Agusta Muters was born on September 30, 1862, in Osterdock, Iowa. She was the seventh child of Heinrich Muters and Marie "Mary" Moeller Muters. When her parents, her three older brothers with their families left Guttenberg to go west to homestead land in South Dakota, Augusta, then about twenty years old, chose to remain in Iowa.
Agusta married John Jungers In May 1982 in Dubuque, Iowa. I have an unconfirmed report that they had two daughters. It is believed that they remained in the Guttenberg area. Agusta died on February 5, 1936 in Dubuque. There may be information available about them in that area which could be researched. This is the only information we have on them Now.

  Notes for PAULINE MUTERS:
            Pauline Muters and William Bovee
Pauline Muters was the eighth child of nine children born to Heinrich Muters and Marie Mueller. She was born in Guttenberg, Iowa on March 26, 1866. Pauline would have been sixteen years old in 1882 when her parents, her older brothers, Henry, and their wives and children, left Iowa to become pioneers in Dakota Territory. She remained in Guttenberg then and never moved to Dakota Territory.
On September 29, 1886 she married William Bovee, a marriage that would last fifty years. William Bovee was born in Cottage Inn, Wisconsin. Pauline was twenty and William was twenty- eight at the time of their marriage.
They moved to Crescent Harbor, Washington in about 1918. It appears that their home was Crescent Harbor, but that their mailing address was R.R. Oak Harbor, Washington. They lived there the rest of their lives. Billie Bovee died on January 29, 1936. Pauline died in July of 1952.
A copy of a letter in Pauline's hand writing to her nephew Emmett Muters dated November 20, 1928 tells of her concern for John Henry Muters, her brother and father of Emmett. John Henry died on his seventy fifth birthday, just seven days later.
                              January 28, 1994 O.T.
A photo of Pauline will be found in the scrap book.
