Notes for W
ILLIAM BREWSTER:
William Brewster, known to the world as "Elder" William Brewster was born in Scrooby England late in 1566 or early 1567. He was educated at Cambridge University at Peterhouse College. He was the Secretary of Sir William Davidson who was at the court of Queen Elizabeth. Following his father's death William succeeded him as Keeper of the Post at Scrooby. This was not a Postmaster job but one of importance in that he made sure of the forwarding of Government dispatches and kept the actual mail service moving. He lived in the Manson House in Scrooby and recieved as large a salary as the Secretary of the State in Elizabeth's time. He became a Separatist or Puritan over disputes with the Church of England. He was imprisoned and then exiled with other Puritans to Holland. He suffered much hardship and loss of property. He was one of the leaders and the minister to the band that came to New Plymouth on the "Mayflower" in 1620. He died in Plymouth Mass. April 10, 1644 " Greatly Venerated"
His wife's name was Mary Love ( some claim it was Wentworth) but the naming of one of their sons Love would possibly indicate the use of her family name.
