Descendants of William Boynton, Sr. Generation No. 1 1. WILLIAM2 BOYNTON, SR. (ROGER1) was born Abt. 1589 in Knapton, Yorkshire, England, and died 1615. He married (1) UNKNOWN. He married (2) MARGARET. Notes for WILLIAM BOYNTON, SR.: The lineage of the Boynton family in America can be directly traced to the family of William Boynton, Sr., who was born in Knapton, Yorkshire, England around 1589. William was married twice. The name of his first wife is unknown. The first name of his second wife was Margaret. William Boynton, Sr. and his first wife were known to have two sons, John Boynton and William Boynton, Jr. In the year 1637, John and William, Jr. joined the expedition of Sir Matthew Boynton, who was their cousin, and others who had made extensive preparations for a settlement in the "new" England. Sir Matthew remained behind and joined the fortune of Oliver Cromwell. The remainder of the party left Hull, England in the Fall of 1638. They arrived at Boston in New England the same year. Many of the families were quite wealthy and brought with them the means to purchase a tract of land between the towns of Ipswich and Newbury. They took possession of the land on April 19, 1639. They called the settlement Rowley in honor of their minister, Ezekiel Rogers, who had been a preacher at a village named Rowley in Yorkshire, England. William Boynton , Sr. was known to have written his will on July 2, 1615. He died later that year. His sons John and William were the progenitors of a large family of Boynton descendants in the United States. Children of WILLIAM BOYNTON and UNKNOWN are: i. William was a tailor by trade. William and his family residedfor awhile in a home on Bradford street next door to his brother John. William served as a schoolmaster in Rowley for many years and may have been the first person who was appointed to this task. On January 16, 1673, he was given the task of ringing the meeting house bell and sweeping the meeting house. For this he was paid a sum of two pounds and twelve shillings. In 1654, William and his wife purchased nine acres of land. They raised a family of seven children. William died in Ipswich in 1686. his wife Wlizabeth died in Salisbury the next year. 2. ii. Ellen was also born in England, although the date and lineage are presently unknown. John and Ellen apparently had seven children. The oldest child was Joseph Boynton Sr. of this lineage. Notes for ELLEN PELL: Ellen was a maid-servant of Atherton Hough. She was admitted to the Boston Church on May 4, 1641. She was dismissed to Rowley on August 1, 1943. She married John Boynton around this time in 1643. After John's death in 1671, Ellen married Maximillian Jewett, son of Edward Jewett and Mary Taylor. In 1752 Ephraim received from his father lands in Coxhall, York County, Maine. In 1757, Ephraim sold his farm in Rowley and moved to Chockset. He later married Sarah Snow, the daughter of Jonathan Snow and Sarah Bangs. They were married as early as 1766, since she signed a deed with him on March 26, 1766. The date of Sarah Bangs birth is unknown to me, but she was born in Shrewsbury, MA. She died in Wilkes Co., GA some time after 1790. Amos Boynton was initially a tailor by trade. However, he later became a farmer. The family moved to Fitzwilliam, NH some time prior to 1774. His name first appears in the church and town records of Fitzwilliam in 1774. Amos fought in the Revolutionary War. He was a Sergeant in the Companies of both Captain Whitcomb and Captain Clayes. His name appears in the Company Muster Roll of Captain Clayes on July 22, 1778. He married (1) UNKNOWN Abt. 1865. He married (2) ELIZABETH SARTWELL Abt. 1878. Notes for GAINES MOSES BOYNTON: Gaines Moses Boynton was born in Talbot County, GA in 1837. Gaines Moses apparently married for the first time about 1865. However, I have not yet been able to find out the name of his first wife. Gaines and his first wife had at least one son, Gus Wirt Boynton, of this lineage. Gus Wirt was born in Texas in 1869. I have not yet been able to find additional information about Gaines' first wife. It is known that Gaines married a second time to Elizabeth Sartwell in 1878. They had at least two children, Ross Boynton and E. V. Boynton. Ross was born in Texas in 1879 and E. V. was born in Texas in 1883. Gus's wife, Minnie Asa Braddock reported to family members late in her life that Gus also had a sister, possibly named Fannie. However, I have no additional information about her. Gaines Moses reportedly attended the University of Pennsylvania Medical School from 1857 to 1859. At that time, he listed his home address as being at Albany Post Office, Georgia. His instructor in medical school was Dr. Jeremiah Hillsman, who also was from Albany, Georgia. Gaines apparently moved to Carthage in Panola County, Texas in 1859. In 1861, he joined the Confederate Army as a Private. He enlisted in E Company of the 11th Texas Infantry at Tyler, Texas. In 1862, he detached to Gould's Battalion, Burnett's Regiment, 13th Texas Cavalry as Assistant Surgeon. He participated in the Arkansas and Louisiana campaigns. He was discharged in 1865. The Federal Census for Nacogdoches County, Texas for 1900 lists him as a resident of Swift, Texas and indicates that he was a physician. In March 1913, he lived in Treadway in Lynn County, Texas. At that time, he filed an application for a Confederate Veteran Pension. It was approved and is listed in the Texas Archives in Austin (#23812). He died in Clint, Texas in El Paso County on May 23, 1919. Children of GAINES BOYNTON and UNKNOWN are: 13. i. GUS WIRT11 BOYNTON, b. December 18, 1869, Shelby Co., TX; d. He married MINNIE ASA BRADDOCK December 17, 1889 in Austin, TX, daughter of JOEL BRADDOCK and LUCY CAVENDISH. Notes for GUS WIRT BOYNTON: Gus Wirt Boynton was the oldest known child of Gaines Moses Boynton. He was born in Texas in December 1869, presumably around Shelby County, although this is uncertain. Gus Wirt married Minnie Asa Braddock on December 8, 1889. They had six children altogether. Their youngest child was Elbert Wirt Boynton of this lineage. Gus and Minnie relocated to Newton County, Texas sometime prior to 1910. However, they lived at other times in Beaumont and Austin. My uncle, Sherrill Elbert Boynton, knew Gus Wirt and provided much of the information I know about him. He stated that Gus Wirt was very intelligent, although he had only a 2nd grade education. He was quite a student of history and of the Bible. He apparently liked to write fiction, and he reportedly had several of his studies published in the Saturday Evening Post. They paid him with free subscriptions. Gus Wirt reportedly traveled with his physician father. His father would send him on horseback to get needed medical supplies. Once Indians chased him, but he obviously got away. Gus Wirt was a millwright by trade. He apparently built sawmills throughout east and central Texas. Their children were raised in various mill towns. Sherrill reported that Gus Wirt was a happy man, but "stubborn as a mule at times". Once he told Sherrill to spell Maddog backwards. Sherrill did. Sherrill states that his grandmother Minnie heard it and vowed to "kill Gus on the spot" if he ever did that again. Children of GUS BOYNTON and MINNIE BRADDOCK are: i. JOSEPH GAINES12 BOYNTON, b.
