| Surnames were first recorded on the Iberian Peninsula (Spain and Portugal) in the eleventh century but did not become generally employed until the late Middle Ages. With regard to the Spanish surname Triana, this name is of toponymic origin. Toponymic names are those surnames which derive their origin from a particular place-name near which the orginal bearer lived or held land. There is actually a town by the name of Triana in Andalusia in Southern Spain from hence the original bearer or his family hailed. The name Triana is derived from the Hebrew name Ana meaning "kind or charitable" combined with "tri" and giving the literal meaning "the three Anas". The women in question are all Biblical figures. Ana the mother of Samuel, Ana the wife of Tobias and Ana the mother of the Virgin Mary. Of notable interest is the fact that a sailor named Rodrigo de Triana onboard the Santa Maria, the flagship of Christopher Columbus, was the lookout responsible for spotting land during Columbus' voyage to find the new world in 1492. The Triana family of which I have been raised, has been in Nacogdoches, Texas for over a century. If you know any Triana family members and would like to contact them let me know and I will do my best to have them contact you. If you are a family member or think you may be related, email me and we'll talk. If you have other information concerning the Triana family, please share it with me and I will get it posted for all to know. Please don't be shy and by all means tell me more...... Johnny |
