Adoption in the 1800s combined with a courthouse that burned down at least twice in the past century often means a brick wall. We've hit that wall, but I'm hopeful the Gilberts of Northeast Arkansas will magically reappear. A cousin was able to claim the very extensive holdings of the Archer family (and impoverish the rightful heirs) following the death of the adopted son. Sounds like something out of a victorian melodrama, but it's real! This tracks our family as much as we can without the Gilbert connection.
