James Crider Obit

“Uncle Jim Crider’s earthly tenament of clay is cold in the grave, but his immortal spirit has only changed from this mundane sphere to eternal habitations not made with hands.  His passing occurred on Friday last, May 24th.  Death came apparently from a stroke of apoplexy or paralysis, which struck him on Thursday afternoon just after Mr. Crider had eaten his dinner.  He was not known to be ill, having just returned from a visit with his son, Robert, who lives some five miles away.  While his wife was busy with household duties, she heard a heavy fall on the porch and on going to him she found him speechless, nor did he ever utter another word.  Mr. Crider was converted in 1849 at the age of 16 years while living in Kentucky.  Later he moved to Illinois, which has been his home as we believe, ever since.  He was a man of fine character, a zealous member of the Methodist Church who took great delight in testifying for the Great Master and urging the erring to embrace the Christian faith.  Mr. Crider was five times married, his last wife being the widow of Uncle Josh COPLAND, a notable man in this locality, and one of the earliest settlers in Massac County.  Mr. Crider leaves four sons: Grant, Thomas, Robert and Perry; also two daughters, Mrs. James COOK and one daughter in Kentucky.  Funeral services were held on Sat. at Oak Grove Church in Hillerman precinct by Rev. Robert Smith and Oscar Brown.
