Andrew M. Beck was born July 5, 1795 in Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina to parents George and Elizabeth (Claver) Beck. (Per his burial report in Kaufman Co., TX)

When Andrew was a child of 12, his parents left Rowan (now Davidson) County, North Carolina, stayed for a year in Bear Grass, (now) Louisville, Kentucky until his father, George, and older brothers, John and George, Jr. found the location to build Beck's Mill, on Mill Creek at Organ Spring, in 1807. The family formed the settlement of Beck's Hill in Howard Township of Washington Co., Indiana (then Indiana Territory - later Harrison County - then Washington County) south of Salem. (As written in Washington County History)

Andrew grew up around Beck's Hill, south of Salem, and he married Miss Susan"Sukey" Nowlin Devin, a minister's daughter. Their marriage is recorded in Book A, page 35 of Washington County, Inidana records. Her parents had been residents of Gibson County, IN. They were Alexander Devin and Susan Nowlin Devin. Andew and his wife had six children. She died in the childbirth of John J. in 1832, and we have not found evidence of her burial place. Their children were Elizabeth Beck, Sarah D. Beck, Susan N. Beck, Virginia Beck, Alexander D. "Elick" Beck, and John J. Beck.

Fourteen months later, Andrew married Rebecca Barker and they had five other children. They lived in Jackson Township, Washington Co., IN. Children were Parthena A. Beck, Andrew Jacob Beck, Martha Arilla Beck, Rebecca E. Beck, and Isabella Maria Beck. Andrew and Rebecca took the younger children and moved to College Mound, Kaufman County, Texas about 1854. On the trip, one child was born, died, and buried beside the birthing stream. Andrew's older brother, John Jacob Beck, had taken his large family and others to the Republic of Texas in 1845, traveling through Lawrence County, Missouri, where some of the families stayed. However, five of his daughters and their families did take land grants in Texas and owned massive acreage there in east Texas. John Jacob's wife, Anna/Annie Rogers Beck was the one who chose the College Mound (formerly called "Beck's Mound) Cemetery and she was one of the first to die and be buried there. Today, in 1999, there is a Methodist Church which preserves much of the history of these early settlers - Beck - Henry - Fogleman - Zink - Pavey - Allen.

Source: Anne Walker, 11904 Tedford St., Austin, TX 78753 - DOOLEY11@prodigy.net on 1/19/1999 has done much family research and documentation on the Devin and Nowlin families, including THE WILL OF BRYAN WARD NEWLIN (NOWLIN) probated July 1810 in Pittsylvania Co., VA, William Devin, Sr.'s 166th Continental Line War Record, a list of Certified documents for Proof in D. A. R.

Susan "Sueky" Devin was born September 22, 1796 to Rev. Alexander Devin and Susanna Nowlin Devin. Susannah was the daughter of Bryan Ward and Lucy Wade Nowlin; she had fifteen siblings.

Susan's father, Alexander, was the son of William Devin, born about 1725 in Alsac Loraine or Ireland, came to America when he was 12, died in Virginia in 1802. He was a Revolutionary Patriot, served on Grand Jury, etc. One record has listed that he was born in Dublin, Ireland, 1724 and was a descendant of a Huguenot family that was driven from France because of religious persecutions.

The family immigrated to Ireland some years previous to 1724 to avoid death and destruction in France, and where they might worship God according to the dictates of their conscience. So, William came to America in 1745-46 and soon afterwards married, about 1750, Sarah Smith and settled in Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

Recorded April 19, 1802, in Deed and Will Book 11, p. 243, Chatham, Pittsylvania Co., VA, is the will of William Devin, Sr. made November 25th, 1800. It named the children James Devin, Mary Devin Bigger, William Devin, Jr., Robert Devin, Joseph Devin, Sarah Devin, Margaret Reynolds children and John Devin. This will was made evidently, after the death of his wife, and the son Alexander had relinquished his rights to the estate. Family tradition has it that Alexander wanted his part for an education and wanted to go west, which he did. A Mr. Boyd of Indianapolis whose ancestor was John Devin who also came to Kentucky and lived near Bowling Green where Alexander Devin lived. He has records of where the farms were; and also has these dates taken from Pension Papers and other sources:

Mary Devin, b. 1747; James Devin; b. 1748; John Devin, b. 1750/51; William Devin, b. April 6, 1759 in Lancaster Co. PA, died April 11, 1858; Joseph Devin, Sarah Devin and Margaret Devin Reynolds; Alexander, b. March 22,1 1769 in Pittsylvania Co., VA and died in Gibson Co., Indiana near Princeton on January 3, 1822, buried in Warnock Cemetery; married Susan Nowlin on July 9, 1791 in Chatham, Virginia. Susan died November 8, 1846 in Princeton, Indiana at her son Joseph Devin's home.

Susan "Sueky" Nowlin Devin married Andrew M. Beck near Beck's Mill, Howard Township, Washington County, Indiana on May 6, 1821, which is recorded in Marriage Records, page 5 in that county.

She gave birth to Sarah D. Beck on November 20, 1823; Elizabeth Beck on October 2, 1825; Susan N. Beck on January 14, 1827, Virginia Beck in 1830; to my great-grandfather, Alexander D. Beck on June 19, 1831 and to her son John J. Beck, born December 5, 1832. She died soon after this birth.

Although cemetery records do not show a burial for Susan Beck, she and her family owned property at that time in Washington County and there is a possibility that she is interred at Mt. Tabor Cemetery in Vernon Twp. near Campbellsburg, Indiana.

Charter members were Robert A. & Hester Campbell, Wright and Sarah Stacy, Robert and Mary M. Denny, alfred Collier, William Collier, Jr., Henry H. and Hester Isgrig, James and Lucinda Stephens, William Collier, Sr., Sally Collier, Susan Blackburn, Susan [Devin] Beck, Elijah B. and Elizabeth [Beck] Wade and Polly Russell.

It was written in 1904 that the "Church of Christ and the Christian Church" meant the same thing and caused no confusion. The church baptized new members in Lost River a mile and half south of town at a place known as 'the Collier Ford'.
