She married JAMES WILLIAM GARDNER 28 February 1838 in Washington Co., IN, son of UNKNOWN and UNKNOWN. Source: 1850 Texas Census
Source: "John Jacob Beck" researched & compiled by Kathey Kelley Hunt, 2309 Elizabeth Street, Kaufman, TX 75142 - d.k.hunt@airmail.net. This book was prepared for the exclusive auction of the College Mound Methodist Church, November 1998:
Sallie married James William "Jim" Gardner in Indiana. He was a furniture maker and carpenter by trade, as was his brother, John (1816-1879), who also came to Texas and lived in Kaufman County. The brothers died within a few days of each other in 1879 during an influenza epidemic.
Four of Sallie and Jim's sons joined the Confederacy during the Civil War.
Sallie Beck Gardner outlived her husband and five of her children. Although she could not read or write, she was one of the few members of the Beck family who actually had a Last Will & Testament. Her will was made in September 1891 and in it she left the bulk of her estate to her four surviving children - Manerva Wilson, Sarah Gardner, James P. Gardner and William H. Gardner. She also left $5.00 to her grandson, Edward Blakenship. It is not known why he was singled out as the only grandchild to receive anything from her estate, except that he was the only living grandchild of one of her own deceased children. Sallie signed her will with an "X" as her mark, apparently, like most of her sisters, she was illiterate. Her will is recorded in Kaufman County Probate records, Citation #916.

AMES WILLIAM GARDNER:

James William "Jim" Gardner married in Indiana. He was a furniture maker and carpenter by trade. His brother, John, also came to Texas and lived in Kaufman County.
When members of the Beck expedition left Johnson County, Missouri to come to Texas, Jim and Sallie Gardner remained in Missouri. they did not come to Texas until after January 1847, and it is not known for certain why they chose to do that, but it is known that Jim Gardner did not receive Mercer's Colony land, as most of the other men did. They first purchased land in the area which lays about half way between Kaufman and Terrell, near present-day Highway 34. Jim purchased land in 1858 near what is now Rosser, Texas and moved his family there. Together they had nine children - six sons, three daughters. Their sons who survived to adulthood - James and William - and all the girls - Manerva, Sarah and Belle - married and live in Kaufman County their entire lives.
Four of Jim and Sallie's sons joined the Confederacy during the Civil War. Edward was a Lieutenant, enlisting with Co. G, 12th Texas Cavalry on the 29th of June, 1851. He died during his 30th battle engagement at the Battle of Linesport, Louisiana. His bravery was commended in a letter sent to his family which stated: "...he was a good soldier and a gallant officer who was admired and beloved by all the company and acquaintances in the regiment for his unassuming manner and his courage on the battlefield." It is not known where Edward is buried. He never married.

Source: 1850 Texas Census:
GARDNER, James W, age 32, M, Cabinetmaker, born VA
Sarah E. Beck, age 29, F, born IN
Edward J., age 11, M, born IN
John, age 7, M, born IN
Perry, age 5, M, born MO
Catherine, age 3, F, born MO

Source: 1860 Kaufman Co TX Census - Kaufman Post Office:
GARDNER, J. W. 45 m VA Farmer 1000/1970
Sarah 38 f IN
Edward 21 m In Cabinetmaker --/400
John 17 m MO
Oleno P 15 m MO
Catherine 13 m TX
Sarah 8 f TX
James 6 m TX
Susan 4 f TX
William 1 m TX

By the above comparison, Oleno must have been Oleno Perry, John was either born in IN or in MO and Catherine(Katherine) might have been born in MO or in TX. The family probably arrived in Texas in 1847 and may indicate that actually Catherine was born on the way into Texas.

11. ELIZABETH ANN "BETSY"5 BECK ((CAPT)JOHN JACOB4, GEORGE(MAJOR)3, DAVAULT (DAWALT/DABOLT)2, UNKNOWN MR.1) was born 1822 in Beck's Mill, Howard Twp., Washington Co., IN, and died 30 October 1851 in Possibly Kaufman Co., TX or Johnson Co., MO or in between at age 29. She married (1) JAMES M. ALLEN Abt. 1836 in Pbly Washington Co., Indiana. He was born 1822 in TN (was a carpenter & furniture maker), and died 1842 in Washington Co., IN. She married (2) HENRY RATTS 09 July 1843 in Johnson Co., MO, son of GODFREY RATTS/RATZ and MARGARET MALEY. He was born 1820 in Tennessee, and died 16 July 1867 in Old Kiser Cem., Kaufman Co., TX.

LIZABETH ANN "BETSY" BECK:
Source: Contributed by Glenn H. Morris, R 1 Box 1055, Watts, OK 74964 - 1997; Kaufman County, TX census, histories, cemetery records.
Elizabeth "Betsy" Beck was first married to a Mr. Allen, then married Henry Ratts; she had one known child, Jonathan A. Allen, from the first marriage, and two daughters from her second marriage.
As Sarah Elizabeth Ratts was born in 1847, and Elizabeth "Betsy" Beck Ratts does not show in the 1850 census of Kaufman Co., Texas, we surmise that "Betsy" may have died in that period of time.
In the legal paper of John J. Beck, Deceased in 1869, Box 25, Case 418, descendants asked to divide the estate. "1/11the part of the estate was asked by Jonathan Allen, Margarett Lewis and Sarah Friller, heirs at law of said Elizabeth Rats deceased and formerly the daughter of John J. Beck, deceased."

Betsy first married James M. Allen, of Washington County, Indiana, who evidently died in Indiana before the Becks started to Texas. James was born c1822 in TN. He died cc late 1842. In 1843, at Johnson County, Missouri, Betsy remarried, this time to Henry Ratts, who was also from Washington County, Indiana. It is not known whether Henry was part of the initial group traveling to Texas from Indiana with Betsy and the other Beck family members, or if he was already living in Missouri in 1843, possibly having gone there when Andrew Henry did.
Betsy's life in Texas was not much longer than her mother's was. She died in 1851 and Henry remarried to Synthia Kenn, the sister of Evaline Keen, who became the wife of his brother, Hugh. He took custody of Betsy's son, Jonathan, as well as their two daughters, Sarah and Margaret, after Elizabeth died. In 1850 census, the two girls were living with their Ratts grandparents in Washington Co., IN.
According to birth records of his daughters, Henry left Betsy & Jonathan in Missouri and came to Texas with the Beck group. He apparently made more than one trip back to Missouri before actually moving his family to Texas, as Betsy had a baby in 1844 and another in 1847, both in Missouri.

Betsy died Oceober 30, 1851, per guardianship records in probably TX, but possibly MO, or points in between at 29 years of age.

I have been working SO hard on so many Kaufman County related things- I do hope you are keeping up with all the NEW stuff being added to the Kaufman GenWeb page---have a bit of info to pass on about some of the BECK family members - I have proven that Jonathan A ALLEN, son of James &
Betsy BECK Allen, DID survive to adult age. I found him on the roster of Co F, 3rd TX Cavalry in the CSA,
enlisted Mar 1862 & was discharged Apr 1865. I have no idea what happened to him after that....

Take care- hope you are all doing Ok- we are.

ENRY RATTS:
Source: Information on Henry Ratts was given by a descendant, Glenn Morris, of Watts, Oklahoma - 1997; also 1860 Census Kaufman Co., TX
Source: "John Jacob Beck" researched & compiled by Kathey Kelley Hunt, 2309 Elizabeth Street, Kaufman, TX 75142 - d.k.hunt@airmail.net. This book was prepared for the exclusive auction held at the College Mound Methodist Church, November 1998:
Henry Ratts is listed on the 1846 Henderson County Tax Rolls and is enumerated on the 1850 Kaufman County Census, living with his brother, Andrew Hugh Ratts - the two of them living alone.
Henry signed his Mercer's Colony certificate with an "X" on January 15, 1845, the first person in the Beck party to complete his Mercer's land deal. However, he did evidently attain the ability to sign his name, as there are documents bearing his signature. His Mercer's Colony land was located in the Combine area of Kaufman County and he patented it 30 April 1852 (Kaufman Co. Land Deed Book C, p. 60). According to the 1860 Kaufman County Census, he was living on his land then, and after his death, Synthia Davidson (she had remarried to C. H. Davidson in 1868) attempted to keep the land as heer own, but was met with a law suit instigated by Sarah Ratts Fuller and Jonathan Allen in 1870, who testified that Henry Ratts never intended to leave the land to Synthia, but had promised the land to them. They also asked for items which had belonged to their mother, Betsy, in the suit. Synthia was forced to split the property with her two step-children.
The importance of Henry Ratts being one of the earliest settlers in Kaufman County has been recognized by his name being placed on the Wall of Honor at the Kaufman County Library.

The land belonging to Henry Ratts was north of Andrew Beck's in a place known as Combine and Needham Parrish's land was east of Kemp, in the southeastern part of the county, near Prairieville. Hannah Beck Zink Fuller inherited land that had belonged to her second husband, A. C. "Alcey" Fuller,at Tick Ridge, a place located between Elmo and Wills Point in Van Zandt County. Her ex-husband, Jesse Zink's land was in southern Henderson County and it is not known whether she ever lived on that piece of land.

Source: Angela Johnson - jjohn46@wf.net - states "Nell, what a small world it is! My two eldest children, Eric and Kimberly, took their first two years of college at UNT in Denton. I assume you have a copy of the Ratts lineage to fully explore these inter-generational inter-connections (that was a keyboard full), so here are the facts I have:
Godfried Ratz was born 4-22-1743 in Germany and Margaret Swicegood was born 3-3-1749 in Weisbaden, Germany married in Germany and emigrated. Son Henty T. Ratts, b. 10-14-1770 in York, PA married Barbara Winkler b. 10-5-17?? in York, PA, date of marrieage 3-2-1790.
Godfried Ratz is the paternal g-gf of Margaret Jane Ratts, in a direct paternal line. Margaret Swicegood had a brother, John Adam Swicegood, who married Anna Maria Catherine Beck, daughter of Johann C. Beck, George's brother.
Barbara Winkler's father, Franz had a sister, Mary, who married Jakob Veck, also George's brother. I am sure cases are hardly rare, given the small size and closed nature of immigrant communities, but it sure gave me an interesting time this morning figuring it out! Angela

Also, found Henry RATTS & his brother Andrew Hugh both enlisted Co G 2nd TX Cavalry in Jun 1861-both survived the war. AND I do have a CORRRECT death date for Henry- found in the Dallas Herald, 20 Jul 1867- "Henry Ratts killed by a bull 4 days ago in Kaufman County-buried at Old Kiser's graveyard"

  Notes for Jonathan A. Allen:
Source: a descendant of Margaret Jane Ratts, Glenn H. Morris, Rt. 1, Box 1055, Watts, OK 74964:
Jonathan A. Allen's date of birth was determined from the 1850 Federal Census of Kaufman Co., Texas. He is shown in the family of John J. Beck in that census. Henry Ratts is also shown to be in Kaufman County, Texas in the 1850 Census, but his two daughters, Margaret Jane and Sarah Elizabeth, are shown in the same census with their grandparents, Godfrey Ratts, in Washington County, Indiana.
In the Probate of John J. Beck's property, Jonathan A. Allen is not shown as being a son of John J. Beck.
