AVID BECK:
From "History of Lawrence, Orange & Washington Counties, Indiana", Goodspeed Bros. 1884 under the heading "Howard Township, Washington County", p. 928:

David Beck, an old and influential citizen of Howard Township, and proprietor of Beck's Mill, was born in 1821, being the second child born to George and Elizabeth (Masters) Beck; one of thirteen children. His parental ancestors were natives of North Carolina, from which state they removed to Indiana in 1807, locating about five miles south of Beck's Mill. The subject of this sketch had a very limited chance to secure an education, but by his energy succeeded in securing enough for the business of life. In 1843 his marriage with Sarah Elliott was solemnized, and to their union were born six children: Elizabeth J.; Malinda (deceased 1865); John A.; Thomas J. (deceased 1877); George M. and Lorena A. Beck.
He is not a member of any church, but contributes liberally to the support of the church and charitable causes. He is a member of the Masonic Order, and in politics is a staunch Democrat, and takes much interest in the political questions of the day. He has made a decided success in his business, now owning the splendid Beck's Mill and 130 acres of well improved land. He was elected to the responsible position of County Commissioner in 1872, serving six years.
David Beck has also been Postmaster at this point since James Buchanan's administration.

Printed in the Campbellsburg Graphic, January 24, 1901:
David Beck whose death occurred last week at Beck's Mill, is said to have been the oldest postmaster in Indiana and perhaps the oldest in the country. He was appointed postmaster at Beck's Mill by President Buchanan in 1856, and held the office continuously until about one year ago when he was compelled to resign on account of ill health. He was born in 1821 near where he died and had lived all his life.

"George Beck, the founder of the mill, was the father of six boys, John, George, Andrew, William, Jacob and David."
A post office established at Beck's Mill in 1857, where David was appointed post-master by President Buchanan and served until his death January 7, 1901. It was discontinued when rural free delivery was established."

Lorena Agnes Beck was last of six children born to David and Sarah Elliott Beck. She was born at Beck's Mill, Washington Co., Indiana, and was living there when she married 1) Albert Bl Byman on 4 October 1902. Albert was 42 at the time and was living in Martinsburgh, Washington Co., IN. He was the son of Lewis and Esebia (Eusephia Denny) Wyman with other information taking the family back to Virginia. He died in Cherokee, Alalfa Co., OK, 38 miles NW of Enid, date unknown. (Taken from Washington Co., IN Historical Records)

Mrs. Clair I. Brown gave the following information to John Nelson Colglazier:
"My grandma Watkins said: "When Grandad married Aunt Agnes, and we heard that she was very common - that, if so, she couldn't see how Grandad would marry her, because your Grandma Colglazier was a perfect lady - I don't mean perfectly sinless, I mean she was the perfect lady." We came to think a great deal of Aunt Agnes, but his children didn't want Grandad to marry again. They said he had a home with any of them, but he said he wanted a home of his own.
