They came here when the country was yet in the possession of the Indians and wild animals, and have helped to prepare it for their descendants, and render it better than they found it.

Articles in the Salem Democrat had the stories of the sudden deaths of Clarence and Riley. They were 17 and 19 years of age when they took sick quickly and within two days they both died; no cause was found.

Source: Her Obit:
The death of Mrs. Lucinda E. Beck at her home near Beck's Mill, Thursday evening, August 29, at 3 p.m. was not unexpected, as a week of critical illness preceded her death and prepared her family for the sad end. All the living children were at her bedside, excepting Mrs. William Kay, who lives at Alamosa, Colo.

Lucinda Elizabeth, daughter of William and Elizabeth Miller, was born in Howard Township, Washington Co., Indiana, June 21, 1841, and died August 29, 1918, aged 77 years, 2 months, and 8 days. A little more than a year ago she was stricken with a paralytic stroke from which she did not fully recover. Her last illness was of short duration, from which she suffered intensely. She was operated upon for intestinal strangulation, by Dr. Davis, of New Albany, and did not have vitality enough to withstand the shock.

She was married to John A. Beck, May 2, 1861, and to this union were born ten children: George W., Franklin H., Thomas S., who died in May 1916, Mahala J., wife of William F. Kay, of Alamosa, Colo., John J., Emma E., wife of Jesse Dean, who died in 1908, Agnes P., wife of Lewis Smith, of Salem, Nancy C., wife of Ernest Stephenson, of Walton, IN., Clarence A. and Riley O., deceased, whose deaths both occurred on the same day. She leaves an aged husband, six children, 20 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn her departure.

Mrs. Beck joined the church at Kansas at the age of sixteen under the preaching of Bro. Cribb, and ever lived in the faith of a home beyond the skies.

Ma, as she was called, was best known for her love and devotion to her husband and children. She was ever ready to do for her friends and neighbors in sickness and trouble and was noted for her many acts of charity.

Funeral services were held at the family residence, August 31, by Bro. Eli Wingler, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery near by, known as the Beck Cemetery.

(In September 1999 when Donna K. Huff Williams, a great-granddaughter of Lucinda, and I, Joyce Nell Truitt, walked the cemetery, the graves of Lucinda and John Alfred Beck were terribly sunken.)

  Notes for Clarence A. Beck:
Source: From The Republican Leader, January 28, 1898 Beck's Mill (Washington Co., Indiana):

It is with sorrow that we record the death of two bright young men. A double sorrow that has come to a family in a day with a suddenness that shocked the community. Riley and Clarence Beck, sons of John A. Beck, died January 23, 1898 at the ages of 17 and 19 respectively. Four days before their death they were at school. Both were taken sick the same day and about eight hours apart and the same number of hours elapsed between their deaths. They will be greatly missed as they were bright young men, popular with their schoolmates. The funeral and burial occurred on Monday and it was an affecting scene with the two black hearses and solemn cortege. There was a large concourse of sorrowing friends. Both bodies were laid to rest in one grave at Beck's Cemetery. Father, mother, four sisters and four brothers of this family remain to mourn a broken family circle.

An article about their deaths was also in The Salem Democrat.
