| Thomas Tuck (1798 - March 2, 1858) The first written evidence we have of the existence of Thomas Tuck is that of the record of his marriage in 1821 to Ann Tanner, daughter of John & Mary Tanor(sic). The records of the parish of Hilmarton in the county of Wiltshire, England provides the following proof of their marriage: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Tuck of the Parish of Ogbourne St George in this County Labourer and Ann Tanner of this Parish Spinster were married in this Church by Banns with Consent of Parents this Twenty third Day of October in the Year One thousand eight hundred and Twenty one. By me Geo. Briggs Evans Minister This Marriage was solemnized between us X (The mark of Thomas Tuck) X (The mark of Ann Tanner) In the Presence of (signature of Joseph Reeves) (signature of Janas Hunt) No. 41. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Further evidence of Thomas' life in England comes from the 1841 census for Clyffe Pypard, Wiltshire. The census lists the following people living at Thornhill Manor: Name Age County of birth Occupation Thomas Tuck 43 Wiltshire Agricultural Labourer Ann 42 Wiltshire James 14 Wiltshire Jacob 9 Wiltshire Rachel 9 Wiltshire Mary 5 Wiltshire John 1 Wiltshire In addition to this, parish records indicate that Thomas and Ann had two children before James: William [0.1.], and Sarah Ann [0.2.]. William who was baptized on September 16, 1822, but also died on January 12, 1840 (and so does not appear in the census). Sarah Ann was baptized on August 6, 1824, we were unable to find any further records of her, but assume that she was in service at the time of the census. Thomas and Ann also had two children who died shortly after birth: George [0.4] and John [0.7]. George was baptized on January 3, 1831, and died on February 6 at six weeks of age (from this we can calculate that he was born on or around December 25, 1830). John was baptized on December 31, 1834, but died April 29, 1835. All of the children were born at Thornhill Manor with the exception of William who was born nearby at Broadtown Manor and all were baptized in the parish of Clyffe Pypard, Wiltshire by the Vicar, E. Goddard. It is an interesting note, that Rev. E. Goddard was also a leasee of two of the many farms that made up Thornhill Manor. The first evidence we have of Thomas Tuck in Canada is the 1848 census of Upper Canada (Ontario). He is listed as living on Lot 9, Concession 1, Oxford township, Grenville county. He did not own the farm, nor did he operate it. |
