There are at least two versions of the origin of the Tucker surname. One version is that our forefathers worked as furniture makers and because they would "tuck" straw and other materials into the padding of a chair seat or into mattress ticking, they became "Tuckers". Another version, which can be found in genealogical texts such as, "The Tucker Band" by Harold Lawrence and Nancy Cutherson, states: "Tuckers, who are of Norman descent, bore the original name Tout Couer (all heart) which later was anglicized to Toukere, Toucker, Tuckere and then to Tucker".
My ancestry has previoulsy been thought to be: Robert Tucker (1652), Capt. Robert Tucker (1676), James Tucker (1698), Robert Tucker (1752), Lemuel Tucker (1795), McDonald Tucker (1830), Berry Wilson Tucker (1859), Clayton Wilson Tucker, Sr (1888), Clayton Wilson Tucker, Jr (1917) and me(1956. Recent DNA testing indicates Lemuel Tucker (1795) was not a son of Robert Tucker. b 1752. They are closely related however and somehow Lemuel ended up being associated with Robert Tucker and in particular Robert's oldest son, Aulden Tucker and Robert's only documented daughter, Catherine (Cassie). There is also the possibility that the Cassie Tucker who appears in the Lincoln County, TN records was not his daughter but a second wife. We may never know the correct story and my correct lineage.
My branch of Tuckers eventually landed in Lincoln County, TN (where I grew up) due to the wanderings of Robert Tucker (1752). Robert was in Mecklenberg County, VA in 1779, Halifax County, VA in 1785, Pendleton District, SC in 1793,may have been in Elbert County, GA in 1803, but definetly was in Lincoln County, TN by 1808.
Robert Tucker's family branch is very closely allied with the Glenn family. It appears Robert and Mary Tucker lived near John and Abigail Rogers Glenn in both the Pendleton District of SC and then again in Lincoln County, TN. There is no evidence that John and Abigail Glenn ever lived in Linclon County, TN but they are found in the records of Limestone Co., AL, which is across the Alabama state line from western Linclon Co, TN. Eventually, six of Robert's sons and his only daughter would marry children of John and Abigail. Family oral history and court records say Abigail was one-half Choctaw Indian and in the 1800's when Native Americans were forcibly removed to the new Indian Territories in what would later become the state of Oklahoma, Robert's children and their Glenn spouses migrated to the Indain Territories. Records have been found of Tucker-Glenn branches left along the way in west Tennesse, Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, Missouri, Texas, and Arkansas.
Another family closely allied with my Tucker branch are the Georges. Records show that a Benjamin George was a neighbor of Robert Tucker's in Virginia, South Carolina, and Lincoln County, TN. It is unclear if this is the same Benjamin George, however. A Benjamin George and his family arrived in Lincoln County about the same time as Robert Tucker. The same Benjamin George also briefly adopted one of Robert's grandchildren, Cassie, when she was orphaned by the deaths of both parents. Cassie would ultimatley be adopted by a family in Illinois.
My maternal great-great-grandfather, Richard George, was probably related to Benjamin George. Although Richard was born in Tennessee, he also first appeared in Lincoln County records about the same time as Benjamin George and Robert Tucker. Many of Richard George's descendants lived on Tucker's Creek, just as Benjamin George did.
Good luck and happy hunting!
