* Tunink, Tunick, Tunning Brothers from Holland: Dave Tunink*

Updated December 12, 2001

This is the story of the three Tunink brothers who came from Holland. All three have John as a first or second name. They are John Bernard, who I am related to, Albert John, and John Fredrick. In Holland the name was spelled several ways: Toenink, Tuning, Tunink, and Toenman. In the Dutch language man, ink, and ing all mean man. The word Toen or Tun is derived from the modern Dutch word tuin, which means garden. So the name Toenink or Tunink literally means "man from the garden". Our family got this name because they lived on a farm called Toenink, based in the community of Agelo, Holland.

Albert John's first two children have a last name of Tunick. These two are the only ones I know of. All the rest of his children have a last name of Tunink. John Fredrick went by the name of John. When he got married he changed his last name to Tunning.

In the family tree, these three brothers are the fourth generation. They had three sisters who I believe stayed in Holland.

When John Bernard was born, the family lived in Hilten, Germany, which is just across the border from Angelo, Holland. They moved back to Angelo, Holland when John Bernard was two.

John Bernard and Albert John came to the U.S. in 1873. John Frederick came over in 1875. Albert John lived east of St. Louis for some time and then moved to Raeville, Nebraska. John Bernard and John Fredrick became U.S. citizens in 1881, in Delaware county of Iowa. They then moved to the Carroll, Iowa area. John Fredrick continued to stay in the Carroll, Iowa area while John Bernard moved to the Raeville, Nebraska area.
