Generation No. 4

      7. Isabella4 Turner (Alexander3, William2, William1) was born August 23, 1854 in Port Huron, Saint Clair Co., Michigan, and died July 11, 1940 in Hamilton, Ravalli Co., Montana. She married Charles Edward Johnson Abt. 1870. He was born April 1854 in Canada.

Notes for Isabella Turner:
"Belle's" grandson, Dorrance, remembers when his grandmother would come to visit . She was a prim and proper woman, and he was sure she found Warroad and its people to be quite rustic.
It is not known how it came about that "Belle" moved to Montana. She died in Hamilton in 1940.

Notes for Charles Edward Johnson:
In the Sioux Uprising of 1862, Charles received the Grand Army of the Republic Medal. He was discharged from the Military by a writ of habeas corpus, April 20, 1863. He had been a private in Company "F" of the Sixth Regiment of MN Infantry Volunteers since August 10, 1852. Charles was in the army at the time of the Civil War, but he stayed here and guarded the Indians at Fort Snelling. These Indians had massacred some settlers near New Ulm, MN. About a hundred Indians were sentenced to death. President Lincoln pardoned all but 36 who were hanged. Charles was probably at the hanging. Charles's father, Edward Johnson, was a paymaster in the English Army. With the help of his son, Albert, Charles dug caves in the hillside, in Ellsworth, WI, for a brewery that was being built. Caves were the only way to keep beer cold at that time. The caves are still visible today but the brewery is gone.
