Notes for Albert Ernest Johnson:
At some point in time Albert decided to change his last name by adding a "T". Johnson to Johnston. Albert's granddaughter, Margaret Johnston Marvin, has a greeting card sent to her father, Dorrance, as a child. The card is from his grandmother, Isabelle. It was addressed to "Master Dorrance Johnson." Margaret always suspected there had been a name change but her Uncle Alvin was very closed mouth about it.
Albert went through his school years in Ellsworth, WI. He sang in the Presbyterian Choir. He came to Warroad in 1896, home steading the Estling place. He was a cigar maker and built a factory, the Lake of the Woods Cigar, in 1906. He became a stage owner and ran supplies for about 15 years to six saloons for approx.. $500.00 a month. Albert began fishing when the county went dry and had a mink farm.
- One story as told by Albert grandson, John: I remember helping my grandpa butcher an old horse for mink feed. We started early on morning. He shot the horse with a rifle. He was a very good shot and it was said he could shoot equally well from either shoulder. It took all day to gut, skin, and cut up the horse. He told lots of stories about when he was young and had been a stage coach driver from Winona to St. Paul. He also had gone out west and worked as a cowboy, too. He liked to drink and fight, being small didn't matter. He would with anyone when he was drinking.

Notes for Hilda Waraas:
Hilda came to America from Norway in the summer of 1908. Shortly after arriving, she met Jacob Ostrum and they were married on December 5, 1912. Their first daughter, Emilie, was born on February 3, 1913. Hilda became pregnant again that year but was having marital problems with Jacob. She took Emilie and returned to her home in Norway late in 1913. Emilie died of pneumonia shortly after arriving in Norway and was buried in the family cemetery near Trondheim. On April 20, 1914, Hilda's second daughter, Oddbjorg Sofie, was born. She returned to North Dakota with Sofie and divorced Jacob in 1916. Hilda married Alexander Turner later that year.
Hilda and Alexander had seven children. In 1928, Hilda was committed to a hospital for mental distress. Sometime later, she was transferred to the Fergus Falls State Hospital. She remained there until she died in February 1941.
Hilda's daughter, Sofie, was send to a girl's school in Brookdale, MN. The other seven children were separated in 1928 and sent to live with relatives and friends. Clara went to live with Alexander's half-sister, Nellie Matthew and Hazel went to Alexander's cousin, Al Johnston in Warroad, MN. The youngest five were adopted by family friends. The amazing part of this sad story is the all eight children remained in contact with each other and their father throughout their lives.
