Notes for Lewis Nelson BAIR:
Lewis' obituary in the Plymouth Daily Pilot newspaper states that he passed away at his home on East Ninth Street, Rochester, Tuesday evening at 10:15. Death was due to complications. He was 74, and had been ill for the last six years. Gangrene from an unknown cause set in his limbs several years before and he had to have both removed. Mr. Bair had been in bed since last November. The obit states that he was born on a farm near Lake Maxinkuckee. After marriage to Martha Ellis, they moved to a farm north of Richland Center. After Martha died, he married Manda Hisey in 1909 and later moved to Rochester. Lewis was a member of the United Brethren Church. The funeral was held at the U. B. Church in Rochester, the Rev. N. C. McCoy in charge. Burial was made in the Jordan Cemetery north of Richland Center.

The above obituary may be in error in stating that Lewis N. Bair was born near Lake Maxinkuckee, which is in Marshall County. The marriage application of Lewis' son, Clarence E. Bair to Celesta M. Kreighbaum states that Lewis was born in St. Joseph Co., IN. The application is filled out and signed in Clarence's handwriting. The obituary for Peter Bair, Lewis' father, states that Peter lived in St. Joseph County at one time and did not move to Marshall County until 1850. Since Lewis was born in 1848, it is more likely that Lewis was born in St. Joseph County.
