      3. Mary Magdalena RINGER24,25,26,27,28,29, born 28 May 1842 in Stark Co., OH30,31,32; died 27 December 1928 in Marshall Co., IN33,34. She was the daughter of 6. Michael RINGER and 7. Anna RUPERT.

Notes for Edwin KREIGHBAUM:
CIVIL WAR SERVICE - Edwin enlisted in Company "F" of the 9th Indiana Infantry Volunteers on 20 April 1861 at LaPorte, Indiana. The Ninth Indiana was formed at Valparaiso, Indiana as a three-month regiment on April 15, 1861, two days after the firing upon Ft. Sumter, S.C. Col. Robert H. Milroy of LaPorte was in command. After training for 30 days, the regiment was sent to West Virginia. During this time they fought in three actions: Philippi, West Virginia on June 3, 1861; Laurel Hill, West Virginia on July 10, 1861; and Carrick's Ford, West Virginia on July 13, 1861. In West Virginia the regiment earned it's new name the "Bloody Ninth". Edwin served as a Private, and was discharged on 29 July 1861 at Indianapolis, Indiana.

On 24 June 1889, Edwin applied to the government for an Invalid Army Pension claiming disability from chronic diarrhea. In the application documents Edwin alleges that while on duty at Philippi, West Virginia in the Spring of 1861, he was sick from the use of bad water and bad food. In a August 19, 1890 Declaration for Disability form, he states he is suffering from rheumatism of both legs. The Surgeon's Certificate dated December 16, 1891 states the following about Edwin: Pulse rate 74; respiration 20; temperature 98.5; height 5 feet 2 inches; weight 115 pounds; age 56 years.

In a February 1892 General Affidavit Edwin states, "I have been troubled with hart (sic) trouble for about ten years, and with catarrh in the head for about 12 or 13 years, and that my disease was not contracted by viscious habits in any way, and are to the best of my knowledge and belief of a permanent character." The Invalid Pension was approved in November 1892 at the rate of $12 per month, retroactive back to 27 August 1890. In April 1895, Edwin received a letter from the Bureau of Pensions in Washington, DC stating that the medical evidence on file in his case did not show that he was suffering from a mental or physical disability which incapacitated him from the performance of manual labor in such a degree as to render him unable to earn a support so as to entitle him to a rating higher than $8 per month. This proposed reduction in his monthly payment precipitated Edwin's submittal of another Physician's Certificate and another General Affidavit from a doctor to substantiate his medical condition. On June 10, 1895 the Bureau of Pensions granted the continuance of the pension at the rate of $12 per month. Pension documents filed between 1895 and 1902 reveal a similar recurring pattern of having to prove medical disability in order to continue to receive payments. Following Edwin's death on March 17, 1902, the Invalid Pension was suspended.

Wife Mary, at age 60, applied for a Widow's Pension on 27 March 1902. This required the submittal of another flurry of affidavits and evidenciary documents. The pension was approved in September 1902 at the rate of $8 per month, retroactive back to 31 March. An additional $2 per month was allowed for child Celesta Malinda up until she attained the age of 16 on June 2, 1902. Commencing September 8, 1916, Mary became entitled to $20 per month per the pension law. At the time of her death in December of 1928, Mary was receiving the pension at the rate of $40 per month.

In her claim for widow's pension, Mary states that she owns a 40 acre farm of which about 30 acres is tillable. She also owns 5 head of cattle, some household goods and the old house. All of her property is worth about $1600, but upon the real estate there are two mortages, one of $400 given to the State of Indiana for the use of Congressional School Fund, and one for $475 given to son Charles M. Kreighbaum. She states that the income from her farm does not exceed $100 per year, all of which she has to pay the taxes and interest and repairs on said farm. The farm was located in Union Twp., Marshall County, and the Recorder's Office describes it as follows: The South East quarter (SE1/4) of the North East quarter of Section Twenty-four (24) Township Thirty-two (32) North, Range One (1) East.
