[NI00005] Rezin Harvey

1794 Emigrated with his father from Montgomery Co. to Hampshire Co., VA now Mineral County, WV

31 January 1835 Settled on farm north of Elk Garden, WV on Potomac River
Farm contains Dixon Cemetery, 148 acres

Received land grants from Virginia governor.
Rezin planted a large peach orchard, but there was no market for his peaches. He then made peach brandy from the peaches, for which there was ample market.

Thomas Wilson III's farm was on the Potomac, 2 miles from Rezin Harvey's farm. 4 of 9 sons of Rezin Harvey married 4 of 9 Wilson daughters. 2 sons of Elijah Harvey also married 2 daughters of Thomas Wilson III. Rezin would joke with Thomas "Ah-h-h Tommy, I have a son for every daughter!" Wilson didn't think the Harvey boys were good enough for his girls and threatened to shoot the next Harvey boy to "steal" his daughter.
Rezin was "unusually strong physically, with a kind disposition." Ref: Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County, MD: "He once borrowed a heavy plow but instead of dragging it home with his team or hauling it on a sled, he shouldered the implement and carried it to his farm, striding over fences on the way." -- page 302.

23 January 1851 Sold farm to James Dixon.
Moved to Allegany County, now Garrett County, MD
30 August 1851 Purchased military lots 481, 482, and 483 called "Anvil" of 150 acres.

1855 Sold farm to son Nathaniel Bell Harvey.

Ref: Hoye's Pioneer Families of Garrett County, MD, page 302: "Rezin is reported to have made frequent visits during his old age to a neighbor's house where he delighted the children by pulling the puckering string in his hunting shirt, thus releasing many big, red apples, for which the children scrambled."

The above was furnished by Janice Harvey Devan.
