| THE UCKO FAMILY TREE History: All the Ucko’s in the world are blood relatives. It is claimed that the Ucko’s come originally from Spain / Portugal and as Jews where expelled by the Catholic Kings in 1492, leaving for Holland. In Holland they where sheep farmers After the seven-year-war, Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, wanted to re-establish sheep-farming in Silesia, so as to make the high-cost import of wool from England unnecessary. For this purpose he brought three experts in sheep husbandry from Holland, which were recommended to him by the Holland government. One of these was a man by name UCKO, and he settled in STAEDTEL – Upper Silesia (today Miejce, Poland) This information was obtained from Professor von Willamowitz, Professor of History at the University of Muenchen, who made a special study of Prussian history at the time of Frederick the Great. Files dealing with the sheep farming expert Ucko are to be found at the Royal Prussian State Archive in Berlin. According to Fritz Ucko, this UCKO arriving from Holland had 13 children!? They are the basis of the Family tree. Concerning the name UCKO: (there are 2 theories). Under the reign of Ferdinand de Aragon and Isabel de Castilla (be their remembrance coursed), the Jews were expelled from Portugal/Spain (years 1451 –1504). Most of them found welcome in Holland where they settled. The famous philosopher Baruch Spinoza was one of them. We assume that the Ucko’s come from there and that the name UCKO is correlated to the Spanish word OJO (OCHO) = eye . Another explanation for the family name, written in the "Juedisches Gemeindeblatt fuer Oberschlesien" (Jewish Communities Organ for Upper Silesia) No. 10, 19th May 1938, p. 4, written by Gustav Samuel Berlin . "Ucko" should be pronounced "Utsko". Its origin is the Hebrew name Yitzchak, in Jewish dialect also spoken "Itsik" or "Uzik". The ending "ko" is a diminutive form. So "Ucko" means "little Yitzchak”. The name must have been protocolled in 1822 by a Polish official. |
