| My project is all about men born or baptized in Massachusetts with the forename "George Washington" and "Washington" during the years 1775 to 1799. I refer to these men as "GWW's." It's a combination of history, genealogy and onomastics. I've searched the printed vital records on more than 200 Massachusetts communities and found more than 1,000 men who were named in honor of General/President George Washington. In general, this project fits into the larger concept of American collective memory. More specifically, it reveals a way in which the American people have expressed their veneration for one of the giants of American history. |
