Fall 2001 Update

It is with great sadness that I inform family members who may be visiting this site that a member of our family, Bradley Van Hoorn, eldest son of Dennis and Kathryn Hoorn, grandson of Louise Uhlich Hoorn, was killed in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. More information will be posted here as it becomes available, as well as a memorial in this or a successor family website that I have planned. Brad was born on June 3, 1979 and had an interest in geneology and I had talked to him on the phone several times, the last time just a few weeks before his death. Brad is a descendant of Carl Uhlich, brother of Johann Uhlich, who emigrated to Michigan around 1884. He switched occupations when he arrived in Michigan and became a farmer, purchasing his own farm shortly after arriving in Michigan. He used to be a shoemaker, like his older brother Johann and (probably) his father, Gottlieb. Family stories handed down relate that, although he switched to farming, he still kept his hand in by making shoes and/or boots for the family and some friends. His eldest son, Karl, continued farming until his retirement.

Berneice Uhlich Spruth

Sadly, I also inform you of the passing of the senior member of the Uhlich family on July 18, 2001. Berneice celebrated her 90th birthday on January 8, 2001. She is the "adopted" daughter of Henry and Minnie Uhlich. Henry is Gustav Anton Uhlich's eldest son by his first of three wives, Antonia Caube. Berneice passed peacefully at her kitchen table (cup of coffee in hand, I'm told) while awaiting the arrival of an aide at the retirement home where she lived in Manhattan, Kansas, to escort her to an appointment with her doctor. She had apparently contracted a cold and had made an appointment to see her physician regarding that health complaint. From family reports, Berneice enjoyed good health for most of her 90 years and never had any serious illnesses. She was very spry and active for a 90 year old, as anyone who knew Berneice can attest to. She will be sorely missed by her entire family.

Uhlich Family Geneology Update

I have completed revising the Uhlich Family Group Sheets and they will eventually be posted on a new Uhlich Family Homepage in the form of Adobe PDFs or Portable Document Format.
In the meantime, I have resolved to capture all family group sheets, kinship reports, descendant outlines, and photo scrapbooks and place all of these documents in PDF files, which can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader software - - which is readily available via download at no charge - - by going to I will eventually place all of these documents on CD ROMs and begin distributing them to all family members so they can have them readily available for viewing and/or printing for their own hard copy. This will simplify and streamline the process of updating and distributing geneological material. Once the family group sheets have been posted on the family homepage, updating them and making them available to all family members will be a breeze! New baby in the family? Just go to the Uhlich Family Homesite, submit the new baby's name, sex, and birthday, and I will do the rest. A revised family group sheet will soon appear as a PDF replacing the old one, reflecting the changes.
I will also incorporate the ability to upload photo files so every family member can have their own photo scrapbooks on the family homepage. The new Family Group Sheets I'm working on are heavily "pictorial" and contain many photos of family members.
You can all get to know family members by not only reading all the "dry" stats - - - birthdates, deathdates, marriage dates, etc. - - - but by viewing photographs as well.
