| Both sides of the family are really hitting the books, so to speak, researching their respective ancestors. Hopefully we'll get more info posted soon! In the past years there have been a couple North Dakota reunions for the Ukestad and Lee families which were quite successful and well-attended. The Smallbacks are an invaluable source of information, and were recently visiting cemeteries in Minnesota and North Dakota. Other names associated with our family, one side or another, are the following: Ukkestad, Tobin, McKillop, Lee, Smallback, Hardie, McArthur, McHenry, Hamilton, Torgerson. If you may have any information on any of the above surnames, feel free to contact us. We'd love to hear from anyone with a possible connection and more stories to tell. The Basics: Uk(k)estad Some siblings from the Ukkestad family (who emigrated from Norway) kept the spelling with two "K"s. The rest apparently dropped one "K" for simplicity - I think it had something to do with the post office! McKillop The story is that my 2nd great grandfather Donald Ross McKillop was the youngest of 16 siblings. One of them (the only one we know, actually) was James McKillop, parliament member for Stirlingshire, Scotland. James is buried in Edinburgh, was known around the Falkirk/Slamannan area. We have in our possession 3 books written by James on various subjects. The family were miners. James McKillop was also their father's name, the mother's was Agnes McArthur. Donald is buried with his wife Jeannie Hardie McKillop in Minneapolis, MN. McHenry The McHenry's story is as follows, according to the family: Two brothers sided against the English and were captured, put on a ship to Canada, and proceeded to jump ship when they got there. They were aided and hidden by a priest who actually gave them the name McHenry for safety, and they eventually settled in Canada. John McHenry is as far as we can go (no dates), but his daughter (one of 7 children) was Elizabeth McHenry, born 1858. John's wife was Sarah Leverdy, whom he married in Canada. More info will follow later. Thanks for stopping by! |
