Benjamin Partee, his wife Mary, and children immigrated to Virginia about 1750 and settled in Loudoun County. The family later moved to Granville County, NC. Benjamin Partee may have been a brother of James Purtee, who first lived in Maryland near present Washington, DC, about 1756, and later lived in parts of Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Kentucky.

Edmund Partee served three tours of duty in the Revolutionary War. In 1780 he worked as a shoemaker for three months in the Granville County Militia under Captain Mangrum. Also in 1780, he volunteered for the cavalry in Granville County under Captain John Gwinn in Colonel John Taylor’s Regiment. In 1781 he served a tour of four weeks as a spy for Captain James Langston’s Company in Granville County.
