The Ulrich-Rahm branch of the family had its American beginnings in St. Louis, Missouri in 1880 with immigration of Josepha Englingling Ulrich and her young family after the death of her husband in Sattel, Switzerland. Josepha's son, Frank X Ulrich married Elise Rahm, whose family also immigrated from Switzerland around 1865.

The Mareschal (Marechal) branch of this family has a long history in St. Louis, Missouri. Nicholas Marechal, the originator of this American family came to the New World as a soldier in the French army prior to 1740. A master turner by trade, he was stationed at Fort de Chartres on the Mississippi River before moving his family to the new village of St. Louis on the west bank of the river. His original land grant in 1765 was where the Arch stands today.
