| Researching descendants of Christian Umble, born Europe c. 1749; arrived Philadelphia October 4,1751. Married Barbara Blank. Three sons - John, Christian Jr. and Henry. I have published a 170 page report of the Descendants and Ancestors of Henry Umble and Susanna Miller (Henry being a grandson of the immigrant Christian). Seeking additional information on progenitor Christian Umble as well as current descendants. My compilation is generally complete thru the 6th generation, with some lines thru the 9th generation. Curious as to whether any Umble families have traced their lineage back to a different immigrant. * * * * * * * * * * * * * UMBLE FAMILY NEWSLETTER Number 98-2 April 1998 Three Umble households have been listed as residents of Springfield, Ohio located in the west central part of the state. The identity of one is certain, a second has some element of uncertainty, but the other is a mystery at this time. Let us turn first to the clearly identified family. Jesse Umble was born on a farm about thirty miles north of Springfield in 1901. In 1924 he was living in Springfield where he lived the remainder of his life except for his last year when he and his wife had moved to Florida. He 1925 he married Marguerite who later taught in the Springfield schools. Their only child, Carolyn, married and moved out of the area. After Jesse and Margarete moved to Florida in 1980 there were no Umbles remaining in Springfield of this or any other family. The second family is that of William H. and B. Edith Umble. The Springfield city directory, the 1920 US Census, and various land deeds establish their presence from 1915 through 1921. An affidavit attached to a deed recorded in 1912 in Springfield definitely identifies Edith and provides a tie to the Springfield area through members of her mother’s family. The elements of doubt are raised by some of the information in the 1920 census, and she being identified in deeds as Edith B. (except for one that correctly gives her name as B. Edith). Also a 1921 Lancaster County, Pennsylvania directory which lists them as living in Bird-in-Hand, and he as a merchant. The evidence strongly supports that William and Edith Umble, otherwise identified with Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, did reside for a period of time in Springfield, Ohio. In 1935 the Springfield city directory lists an Anne Umble associated with Wittenburg College. She also appeared in the 1936 and 1937 editions but at different addresses and employed as a saleslady. There is no person named Ann in the families related to Jesse and William who could plausably be this person. Indeed, there is no Ann Umble identified by any other source who would have been in Springfield at this time. This is the mystery lady! * * * * * * * |
