IL.
Notes for HANNAH KIRBY:
Death of Mrs. Samuel Graham
After seventy-six years spent in this world of happiness, sorrow
and care, Mrs. Hannah GRAHAM passed into eternity on Thursday evening, December
9. For the past twelve or fifteen years
Mrs. Graham had been an invalid, yet her active nature had kept her up so that
she was able to attend to her domestic duties.
For several years past Mr. and Mrs. Graham have made their home in this
city with their son, Judge GRAHAM.
About five weeks ago old Mrs. Graham was stricken down by sickness, and
for more than two weeks past her death was hourly expected.
Hannah Graham, whose maiden name was Hannah KIRBY, was born in
Warren County, Ohio, November 1, 1810.
At the age of nineteen she was married to Samuel GRAHAM, who still survives,
although the old gentleman is very feeble in health. Of this union there were thirteen children, nine sons and four
daughters. One of the sons died in
infancy; all the others lived to manhood and womanhood and are still living,
except Mrs. A. JEFFREY, who died last summer.
About forty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Graham joined the Universalist
Church, and in that faith they lived consistent lives. In September, 1849, they emigrated from
Warren county and located near Waynesville, where they resided till about five
years ago, when they came to Clinton to make their home with Judge Graham and
enjoy peace and quietude in their declining years. All of their children except two are married. It might well be said of Mrs. Graham that
she had no faults. She was the
embodiment of Christian perfection, the salient traits of her character being
that boundless, endless and sublime goodness and charity for her family and
neighbors.
The funeral services will be at Judge Graham's residence at two
o'clock on Sunday afternoon. Interment
in Woodlawn Cemetery.
December 10, 1886
Notes for SAMUEL GRAHAM:
Death of Samuel Graham
After more than the
allotted time of man Judge Samuel Graham departed
this life on last Monday at
the residence of his son, Dr. S. A. Graham,
in Waynesville, aged
eighty-three years, five months and thirteen days.
Judge Graham was born in
Warren county, Ohio, on the 13th of August,
1806. He came from a long-lived stock. His father was born in the
County Down, Ireland, and
when a young man came to this country and
settled on a farm in Warren
county, Ohio, where he died at the advanced
age of one hundred and one
years. Judge Graham was raised on a
farm,
and in September, 1849, he
emigrated from Ohio and settled in
Waynesville township, where
he spent more than thirty years of his
life. When he was twenty-three years of age he was
united in marriage
to Hannah Kirby, on the 1st
of November, 1829. Thirteen children
were
born to them, nine sons and
four daughters, all of whom excepting two
are still living. One of the sons died in infancy, and a
daughter, Mrs.
A. Jeffrey, who died in the
summer of 1876. Mrs. Graham died in
December, 1876*, aged
seventy-six years, and last Tuesday the body of
her aged husband was laid
to rest by her side in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Four years after coming to
this county (in 1853) Judge Graham was
elected Associate Justice
of the County Court, which office he filled
for six years when the
adoption of township organization by the county
disbanded the court. He was next elected Justice of the Peace,
which
office he filled till 1865,
when he was elected Probate Judge, in which
he served four years, being
succeeded by Judge Hall. He was a
member of
the Masonic fraternity.
Judge Graham was a kindly
old man and was always pleasant and affable.
In his home and in his
public life he was the same genial man, beloved
by his children and
respected by his friends and neighbors.
His last
sickness was of brief
duration, and he died surrounded by all of his
children who are now
residents of this county.

8. ELIZABETH5 KIRBY (JAMES A4, JOSEPH3, JOSPEH2, RICHARD1) was born Aug 25, 1814 in Warren Co, OH, and died Apr
25, 1877 in Miami Co, IN. She married LEVI WHARTON CLYMER Feb 06, 1834 in Warren Co, OH, son of HENRY CLYMER and PHEBE WHARTON. He was born Jan 15, 1811 in Warren Co, OH,
and died Jan 18, 1892 in Peru, Miami, IN.
Notes for ELIZABETH KIRBY:
Elizabeth is the daughter
of James and Sarah (Phares) Kirby as shown in Levi's obituary. The history book that shows her to be a
daughter of Henry Kirby is believed to be in error.
Notes for LEVI WHARTON CLYMER:
Obituary
Levi Clymer was born in
Warren county, Ohio January 15, 1811, and died in
Peru, Indiana, January 18,
1892, aged 81 years and three days. He
was the
fifth eldest child of Henry
and Phoebe Clymer. His father was a
cousin to
George Clymer who signed
the Declaration of Independence.
His parents emigrated to the States, from Buck county,
Pennsylvannia, in
1806, coming down the Ohio
River on a flat boat. Their baby, Joseph, was then
only three month old. After
landing the mother being tired and no doubt
worried from the cares and anxieties
of a long journey, took her little ones
on shore, and set her babe
down on a stump to rest. That stump was where the
great city of Cincinnati
now stands and many times after the good lady passed
the identical spot, on her
trips to Cincinnati market. After
Joseph grew to
manhood he became united to
Eliza Keever, and cousin to the late Dr. Moses
Keever, and unto them was
born four sons, all of whom became thoroughly skilled
in medicine, and are now
ranked amoung the most noted physicians of Northern
Indiana.
His parents came to Warren county, and settled upon what is
known as
the old Clymer farm, near
Utica, where Levi, the subject of our sketch
was born. Early in manhood he was united in marriage
to Elizabeth Kirby,
daughter of James and Sarah
Kirby. This happy union resulted in a
family of
six children, three sons
and three daughters. His wife, two
daughters, and one
son preceeded him to that
land from whence no travelers ever returns.
His life
was prolonged much beyond
the limits usually alloted to man, and embraced a
period of the history of
our country from that of a wilderness inhabited by
barbarous Indians, to its
now present state of cultivation, and civilization.
It is not easy to describe the Miami valley in its primitive
luxuriance,
To the eye of the pioneer
no woodland to-day, even in the most unfrequented
spot, wears the rich and
exuberant garb which nature gave it, under the
transformating powers of
civilization. The earth assumes a new
aspect, even
the woods and the streams
are changed. Herbage and shrubs which
once grew
luxurantly in our forest
have been eaten out by cattle until they can only
be found in the most
secluded and inaccessibile places; tree cut down and
succeeded by others of a
different growth. This brief sketch of
this
venerable pioneer's life is
all the occassion calls for, but gives very
little idea of the nobility
of his character. All that is mortal of
this
sterling old man is no
more. He was one of the family of
twelve children,
five boys, and seven
girls. The only surviving member of the
family is a
widowed sister, Mrs Elijah
Williamson, who now lives with her two single
daughters upon the old
Clymer homestead, and is tenderly cared for by them at
the advanced age of 83 years.
The remains were followed by a long concourse of sorrowing
friends and
neighbors, who came to pay
the last tribute of respect to one who life was
spotless. He has solved a
great mystery, he has forded the stream, and his
spirit has returned to Him
who gave it.

Notes for JOSEPH C CLYMER:
JOSEPH C. CLYMER, County
Treasurer, was born in Jefferson Township, Miami County, March 15, 1847. His
paternal ancestors were Pennsylvanians, his grandfather, Christian Clymer,
emigrating from that State in an early day to Warren County, Ohio, where he lived
until his removal to Miami County, about the year 1834. He, with his son Levi
Clymer, father of the subject, settled near Mexico, Jefferson Township, and was
among the earliest pioneers of that section. He was a farmer by occupation and
died sometime in the latter part of the forties. Levi Clymer was born in Warren
County, Ohio, January 15, 1811. He was a resident of Jefferson Township, this
county, until the year 1848, at which time he removed to Clay Township, where
he has since resided. He is one of Miami County’s representative farmers and a
man widely and favorably known for his many sterling qualities. Subject’s
mother, Elizabeth Clymer, was the daughter of Henry Kirby, one of the early and
substantial citizens of Warren County, Ohio. She departed this life at her home
in Clay Township, in the year 1876. Mr. and Mrs. Clymer, were the parents of
nine children, four of whom are living, Joseph C., being the youngest son of
the family. He was reared on his father’s farm in Clay Township, acquired in the
common schools a practical education and subsequently attended the Peru High
School and the Valparaiso Normal College. He began life as a farmer and
followed agricultural pursuits until 1881, at which time he accepted the
position of Deputy County Treasurer, under E. Humrickhouse, and continued in
that capacity for a period of four years. In the meantime, 1884, he was
nominated by the Democratic party as a candidate for that office, and at the
ensuing election received a large majority of the county vote, a fact which
attested his great popularity with the people. He having discharged the duties
of the responsible trust in a manner highly satisfactory to all he was in 1886
re-elected and is now entering upon his second term. Mr. Clymer is an
intelligent, thoroughly well posted business man, and his career has been a
marked success. He was married January 21, 1885, to Miss Emma, daughter of
Isaac and Maria Miller, of Miami County.
