Birth year could be He married ca. 1719 to Mary Occupation: 1759 Blacksmith Burial 1759 Catawba Creek, Halifax Co., VA Chastain Durcray, born ca. 1680; died before 1752. Mary was the daughter of Peter Chastain and the widow of Nicholas Durcray, 1 Nicholas and Mary transported to America on the ship "The Nassau" in 1699. They had two sons; Nicholas, 2 and Jean. Thomas and Mary settled further up the James River from his father`s land at Almond Creek in Goochland Co., which was formed from Henrico Co.. In 1837, Thomas bought land on Stock`s Creek, Amelia Co., Virginia, and lived there until his move to southern Virginia, on Catawba Creek in Lunenburg Co., Virginia, which later became Halifax Co., Virginia.[Brøderbund WFT Vol. 1, Ed. 1, Tree #4989, Date of Import: Jan 13, 2002]

Thomas Prewitt, 1 married Mary Chastain Ducray, the widow of Nicholas
Ducray. Mary and Nicholas were French Huguenots, and this is believed to
be the only Huguenot connection with the Prewitt family. Mary was the
daughter of Pierre Chastain. Thomas and Mary settled further up the
James River from his father's land at Almond Creek, for when Goochland
Co. was formed from Henrico Co. in 1727, Thomas was one of the
first residents.
Thomas purchased land on Stocks Creek, Amelia Co., Virginia in
1737, and resided there until his move to southern Virginia. On July 19,
1745, Thomas began to dispose of his land holdings on Stock's Creek, and
over the next two years, purchased 1,000 acres on Catawba Creek in
Brunswick (Lunenburg) Co., Virginia. In 1752, the portion of
Lunenburg Co. where Thomas lived was placed in the newly organized
Halifax Co..
On May 16, 1759, Thomas Prewitt, blacksmith, gave three of his sons,
John Farmer, Renny Prewitt, and Abraham Prewitt, 150 acres each on
Catawba Creek, Halifax Co.. All these deeds were witnessed by Thomas
Prewitt, 2 and William Prewitt. It appears that Thomas Prewitt, 1
died about 1759, and that his son, Thomas Prewitt, 2 gained control of
the estate.

"Early Virginia Immigrants", by G.C. Greer, Clerk of the VA State Land Office, contains a list of some 25,000 persons who came to Virginia from 1623 to 1666, together with the patentee or person who brought them over. In this list is: Thomas Prewitt, 1636, by Joane Bennet, to Charles River Co..

On May 6, 1636, Joane Bennett, widow, received 450 acres in Charles River Co., VA, upon the new Poqueson River, east towards the bays, west into the woods, north upon the Pinye Swamp (River) and south upon Robert Thrasher. 50 Acres due for transfer of 8 persons: Ann Winter, John Roote, Jon Marshall, Thomas Prewitt, Andrew Chant, Jon Morris, and Pole Carplights. Joane Bennet was a Quaker.

Thomas Prewitt was thus brought over as an indentured servant. Once a person served five years, they got 50 acres of land.

On June 2, 1636, Thomas Prewitt was granted 50 acres of land in Charles River Co., VA, being a neck of ground at the New Poqueson, west upon William Clarke a creek, then east upon Thomas Harwood a creek. The said 50 acres of land being due unto him the said Thomas Prewitt for the transportation of one servant into this colony. It appears that Thomas Prewitt and wife were Quakers and not married by the rules of the established church.

Charles River Co., VA was changed to York Co.. In 1646, Thomas Prewitt confessed he borrowed a canoe from John Wilson and lost it. Ordered that he pay Wilson 2 bushels of corn for it next Nov. 1.

In 1647, John Thomas has an attachment against Thomas Prewitt to secure debt of 600 lbs. tobacco.

On May 24, 1648, Thomas Pruitt confesses judgment to Robert Abrall for 1202 lbs of tobacco to be paid the next October 10 at the house of Pruitt. Three cows bound in security. Court for the Co. of York. Cattle were very valuable to the early settlers. They were expensive to bring over by ship and scarce.

In 1648, Thomas Prewitt confessed judgment to Mr. William Hockaday, 1 1/2 bushel of corn and 56 lbs tobacco.

On July 25, 1648, Whereas Thomas Prewitt and his wife were presented to his court for committing fornication and thereof found guilty. Court ordered that they shall do a pennance in the Parish Church on the New Pawqueson and during the time of devine servis the next Sabbath Day. The church wardens ordered to see this done. Prewitt and his wife to appear at the next Court to avoid further censure. This was because they were not married in the State Church of England. Thus, he underwent a degree of persecution for his being a Quaker even in the New World.

On Dec. 6, 1648, Thomas Prewitt binds himself to pay John Madison 600 lbs of tobacco before next Oct. 1, a steer and heifer as security.

====

In Henrico Co., VA Feb. 1719 Court, Thomas Randolph sued Andrew Pruit, and later Hugh Pruit and Thomas Pruit. In Feb. 1720 Court, Michael Holland entered suits against John Pruit, Thomas Pruit, and Hugh Pruit. In one of these, Hugh Pruit, John Lewis and John Hucabe stand security for Thomas Pruit.

In Henrico Co., VA May 1721 Court, Thomas Jefferson vs Thomas Pruit and Mary, his wife, for debt of 3 pounds 16 shillings. Settled for 15 shillings and 10 pence.

Upon petition of William Kent and John Robertson, ordered the sheriff summon Thomas to appear at next court and give security for estate of Nickolas Ducrey, deceased. In Henrico Co., VA Sept. 1722 Court, upon part of William Kent, who was security for Mary Ducray's administration estate of Nicholas Ducrey, deceased, obtained an order from July Court to deliver said estate into his hands . . . upon inquiry he finds a great part of the said estate wasted by Thomas Pruit who married the widow of said Nicholas Ducray. Ordered John Lewis , William Giles, William Womack, and William Elsup to appraise the estate of nicholas Ducrey.

Thomas and Mary settled further up the James River than his father's land at Almond Creek in Henrico Co., VA, for when Goochland Co. was formed from Henrico in 1727, Thomas was one of the first residents.

The 1729 tithables for Parish of King William, Goochland Co., VA lists: Thomas Prouet - 1 tithe. In 1729, Thomas paid fine of 50 pounds of tobacco for saying a bad word. The 1730 tithables for Goochland Co., VA, list: Nicholas Ducrai - 1 tithe, and Jean de Crais - 1 tith. These were probably step sons of Thoms.

On March 2, 1731, Deed between Thomas and Edward Scott, administrator of John Stephens, deceased, in Goochland Co., VA. The 1731 tithables for Goochland Co., VA, June 1731 Court, Thomas was fined 50 pounds of tobacco for swearing.

FURTHER REGARDING THOMAS PRUETT, 1:
Relocated: Amelia Co., VA

REGARDING MARY MAGDALENE CHASTAIN:
Mary and her first husband, Nicholas, had no children when they came to Virginia on the ship "The Nassau" in 1699. Their sons Nicholas Ducray and Jean Ducray would have been born between 1701 and 1714, since they first show up in the 1730 tithables of Goochland Co., Virginia. Mary and Nicholas were French Hugenots.

On Dec. 16, 1733, Mary, godmother to Zacarie, son of Jacque Robinson and Susane, born Dec. 15, 1733, presented to baptism by Jean Chastain and Rene Chastain. Mary had to have been a close relative of the Peter Chastain - Anne Soblet family. Mary and Nicholas Ducray named a son Jean Ducray, and Mary and Thomas Pruit named a son Rene Pruett.
