Thanks to some help on the Pruitt-L email list at rootsweb.com I've finally broken through the wall that prevented me from finding out who the parents of my gr-grandfather were ... he's listed on the 1880 Pittsylvania Co. census with his widowed mother, Icyphenia.

John Edward Pruitt is the son of Thomas Stuart Pruitt & Icyphenia B. Ford. Thomas is the son of Asa Pruitt & Tabitha Ferguson. Asa is the son of John Pruitt, 2, and John, 2 is the son of John Pruitt, 1 John 1 is the son of Samuel Pruitt & Elizabeth Hawker. It's all coming together now, but I'm still hoping to meet Pruitt cousins from this line. :D

Notes for WILLIAM PRUITT:
The late Dr. Murice Pruitt of Chattanooga, Tenn. thought William Pruitt had the following nine sons and may have had as many as thirteen sons. Until futher records are found, we will list the nine as sons of William and Judith Pruitt.

William bought 100 acres on Terrible Creek, Halifax Co., VA. from his brother, Thomas Pruitt 2 on Feb. 21, 1760. In 1764, he bought 50 acres on Catawba Creek, Halifax Co. VA from his brother, Abraham, and was listed on the polls for 1764 and 1765. In 1767, William sold his 100 acres back to his brother, Thomas, 2 and his 50 acres to John Skailes. It is believed that William moved his family into NC about this time.

William was recorded on the 1790 and 1800 census of Spartanburg Dist. SC, and is said to have died in Spartanburg Dist. about 1813
