!The following is from "The History of Marth's Vineyard, Dukes County,
Mass." in 3 volumes by Charles Edward Banks, MD, Edgartown, published by the
Dukes County Historical Society, 1925.
James Covell was on Marthas' Vineyard from 1651 on He was one of the " First
comers" and received a grant of ten acres March 27, 1651 on the Meshacket
Path, where he built a house and continued to live there until his death. He was
admitted as the proprietor of a half share in 1660, and "submitted" to the
Mayhew government the next year. He was elected the drummer of the train band
at the same time, and served as a juror in 1659 and 1677. His name apprears in
the records continuously in the drawing of lots, though there is a hiatus,
1664-1682, when it appears but once in any connection. In 1687 he was granted
twenty acres of land in the New Purchase, the last time his name occurs
during life. On August 19, 1690, administrtion of his estate was granted to his
son Philip, and he was then called "late desesed." Nothing is known ( to the
author) of his wife, either of her Christian or family name. He had three sons,
Philip, James, and Ezra, and perhaps some daughters, but if so they are not of
record. Through the children of his son James a numerous posterity resided
in Edgartown during the next century, but there has been none of the name in
town for a hundred years past.

There were Indians who adopted the name of Covell before 1700, and this
complicates an already difficult genealocical problem to differentiate the
various James Covells, senior and junior. The name of his wife is not known. Information on James Covell was taken from HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD by Banks.[H7515.ged.FTW]

He did not first settle in Braintree, MA before moving to Edgartown in 1651 as proposed by several researchers. They speculated that since a James Covey had sold property in Braintree in 1651and left the area that he was the James Covell that appeared at Edgartown at about the same time. In fact James Covey and his family had moved north from Braintree after the property sale. The Covey's never were in the Edgartown area.

Of interest is the fact the FHC lists a James Covell being born in 1634 at Edgartown, Dukes County, MA. It also lists just below him Sarah Covell, born 1638 at the same place as James. There is also a notation that one James Covell of Boston received a grant of land at Braintree for 4 heads December 24, 1639/40 and wife Mary. Confusing!

Records of Dukes County list a James Covell as being born abt 1634, no location is given. His wife, Elizabeth is listed as being born abt 1638, no location given.

Information on James Covell was taken from HISTORY OF MARTHA'S VINEYARD by Banks.Maybe a uncle to James Covell, b. 1631-1634
Not likely the same James who lived in Martha's Vineyard.

Mrs. Covell was, quite likely, a member of the Wampanoag Tribe which inhabited the Cape area at the time of her marriage to James. Local history sources from Martha's Vineyard have documented that her Clan (extended family) changed their names to Covell about the time of what is believed to have been the date of the marriage, i.e., a year or better before the birth of the first child,

This is a federally recognized tribe, numbering some 500+ members as of 1994. Contact should be made to the address below:
