Weakley Co., Tn. settlers circa 1830-35, originated in Virginia, North Carolina and beyond to New York, and Pa. The names of their ancestors included Hall, Adams, Martin, Somers, McKeen, Gardner,Whitehead,Terrell,Tomlinson,Hamilton,Paisley,Beekman, Arden, Bouquet,Doak, Hurt, Bruce, George and many more. From Halifax Co., Va. came the Halls, Adams, Martins, Hurts, Bruces and George descendants. From North Carolina and Pa. came many Scottish Presbyterian families: McKeens, Doaks, Paisleys, and Hamilton. From New York came some Dutch settlers: Beekman; some French: Bouquet, and a well known English name: Arden. From Southhampton Co., Va. came the Gardners, Whitehead, Boykin, and Darden. From North Carlina came the Terrells, Allens and Somers. All of these families were present in the Colonies before the Revolutionary War, with many being great patriots who fought bravely for their freedom from England. In 2010, I discovered through DNA testing that Benjamin Hall was descended from Thomas and Margery Claxton Hall of Gloucester County, Virginia. As far as I can determine, Thomas Hall was the first in my family to come to Virginia from England. He married Margery Claxton, the daughter of John Claxton in York county, Virginia circa 1640-45. He and Margery had two sons 1. Thomas Jr. and 2 John. Each son married an Elizabeth and left children. Thomas Jr. died by 1688, leaving at least one son, John. Thomas Jr.'s brother, 2. John Hall also married an Elizabeth and left many children, boys included. Gloucester is a burned county, meaning most all records have been lost, so discovering which of the above sons was the ancestor of my Benjamin is almost impossible. At this point I can only guess which one is my direct ancestor. In future, if I determine this fact, I will enter it here. |
