JOHN HARVERY URIE & ALMA VIRGINIA BAKER John Harvey Urie born July 02, 1852 in Ashland County Ohio. Died May 03, 1933 at the age of 80 plus in St-Helens, Oregon. Buried in the I.O.O.F. or Bayview Cemetery in Warren Oregon next to Great Grandpa & Great Grandma Baker and Catherine Bacon and next Grandma Urie with a large cement slab over all of their plots. John Harvey Urie married Alma Virginia Baker March 06, 1879 in Russell, Kansas by Reverend J.C. Aires, witnesses were N.F. Baker and R.M. Ball. My dad Clyde F. Urie was born in Denver, Colorado December 18, 1879. Newspaper article states that John Harvey & Alma V. Urie came to St-Helens Oregon in 1883. In about 1893 John Harvey was hired as foreman to build Fort Stevens. He was superintendent and foreman of concrete for the gun batteries at Fort Stevens where he worked 18 years. In 1911 he was hired by City of Portland by Commissioner Brewster as official Job Hunter for the unemployed. In 1924 to 1932 he was janitor at the old McBride School in St-Helens, Oregon. He worked long hours at the school. They had a big steam boiler furnace that burned 4-foot length wood, which heated the steam radiators in all of the schoolrooms. I remember visiting him in boiler room at recess and noon hours and he had me sweep up around the boiler room and the basement of the school. After school was let out grandpa had to clean up the wastebaskets of each room and then sweep and clean each of the schoolrooms and hallways including mopping and waxing the floors. Now and then he had me empty waste baskets which we had to take to the boiler room and empty them into a big metal container, which he would use the paper to start the fires each day. In the winter time he would walk to school and start the boilers going by 5 or 6 am so that everything was warmed up, by the time students and teachers came to school. He was very well loved by students and teachers alike. John Harvey Urie and Alma Virginia lived on Bachelor Flat Road. It is the 1st 2- story house on the right hand side off of Vernonia Rd. at the 4-corner area. I think the house is still there in its original form as St-Helens, Oregon. Grandpa and Grandma celebrated their 50 plus years of married life with family get together in 1932 at their home. It was actually their 53rd year. Pictures were taken on their front porch of which I have copies of. I also have a copy of the paper article when Grandpa was hired by Portland for job placement. Alma Virginia Baker was born April 21, 1859 in Washington County Iowa. She married John Harvey Urie March 06, 1879 in Russell, Kansas. They both left Ohio and Kansas for Denver, Colorado where my dad Clyde Ferdell Urie was born December 18, 1879. Then they moved to Houlton, Oregon. After Grandpa died May 03, 1933 Grandma lived alone for many years, she was lonely in that big home. She finally had the upstairs made into an apartment with stairs outside and rented it out for additional income. During the War 2 she married for company Mr. Morris. He died I believe just prior to Grandma. Grandma died July 23, 1944 at Portland, Oregon. She was buried I.O.O.F. or Bayview Cemetery, Warren Oregon, along side of John Harvey Urie. Grandma was always very friendly and well like by everyone. She was very much family oriented. She would do anything for you she possibly could. She was born April 21, 1859 in Washington county, Iowa. Her mother and father came out to Oregon along with her sister and brother in the year after they did. Written by Ed Urie
