an Englishman, he settled in Bertie Co. and married Mary ____. (According to "Linneage of Miss Lucile Pugh, a barely legible typed paper in possession of Margaret U. Griffin in 1998, they lived in Surry Co., Va in 1666.) As per EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA FAMILIES (David Gammon), there is evidence they originally lived in Charles City County, Va. Evidence of his first appearing in N.C. is when he buys land from Arthur Kavenaugh on July 13, 1715 (Chowan Co. Deed Book).
