| The Utay family tree was originally created by Howard Freed in 1988 for the first Utay Family Reunion. In the 1990's Reuben Kaplan Utay entered all of Howard's hard work on to Genealogy.com for everyone to view. He kept the tree updated until the time of his passing in April of 2002. The hard work of Howard and Reuben is extremely valuable and appreciated and their efforts will carry on forever. The Utay Family had a family reunion Memorial Day Weekend 2004 in Dallas, Texas. We dedicated the reunion to Reuben and all of our loved ones who were no longer with us. The name Utay is believed to have originated in Portugal or France although we do not have sufficient evidence to support that belief. Although not much is known about Esther and Joseph Chaim Utay, they were probably born in the late 1830’s. They lived in a town near Kiev, Russia called Mogilev-Podolski, Russia. It’s known that Esther was first married to a man whose last name was Gass. It was an arranged marriage. They had one child, a son named Schmiel. Esther was very unhappy with her marriage to Mr. Gass and she talked him into a “trial” divorce. She said that after they were apart for one year she would re-marry him. He fell for her scheme, and, of course she never did re-marry him, but rather married Joseph Utay instead. Esther and Joseph had three sons together, Wolfe, Edward, and Mottel (Max). According to the 1900 Census taken in Dallas, Wolfe Utay came to the United States in 1881. He settled in St. Louis, Missouri where he met and married Annie Kirtzman three years later. Their first five children, Edward, Joe, Lee, Jake and Sophie were born in St. Louis before Wolfe and Annie moved to Dallas, Texas. Their next five children, Arthur and Harry (who were twins), Ben, Eva, and Simon were all born in Dallas. According to the Census report from Dallas in 1900, Wolfe, Annie, and seven of their children were living at 498 Elm Street, and Wolfe was a jeweler. According to the Ellis Island Records web site, Schmiel Gass age 46 (who became Sam Utay) traveled to the United States on the ship “Arcadia” with his wife Zlote age 37 and their four children, Chane Gass (Annie Utay) age 15, Riwe Gass (Betty Utay) age 8, Nute Gass (Nathan Utay) age 6, and Ester Gass (Estella Utay) age 1 S. Ellis Island Records translated the last name to be spelled Bass, but the correct spelling is Gass. Also on board was a half brother to Schmiel Gass named Mottel Utei (Max Utay) age 33. The “Arcadia” was a steam ship belonging to the Hamburg-Amerika Lines. It sailed from Hamburg on May 28, 1904 and arrived in New York on June 13, 1904. According to the ship’s records Schmiel Gass was a “gold worker”, and Mottel Utei was a “wood turner”. Apparently these Utays migrated to Chicago. Max married Sarah Jaffe who was from San Antonio, Texas. They lived in Chicago and had seven children, Joseph, Seymour, Esther, Frances, Evelyn, and twin sons who died at birth. Edward Hersh and Pearl Utay sailed from Kiev, Russia through Liverpool, England on the ship “Etruria” which landed in New York on June 19, 1904. Traveling with Ed, age 34 and Pearl, age 32 were their six children, Mottel (Myrtle) age 9, Ester age 8, Jossel (Joseph) age 7, Mindel (Minnie) age 4, Sure (Ruby) age 2, and Moische age 10 months. They traveled south and settled in Dallas. Their other five children Lena, Max, Pacie, and Hyman and Oscar (who were twins) were all born in Dallas. |
