UTHE OELKE HOCK & GEHRKE around IllinoisUpdated December 16, 2002 |
I research the surnames of my grandfathers UTHE, OELKE, HOCK, and GEHRKE and those of my maternal great-grandmothers', BURKHARDT, TASCHNER, KRUSE, and SCHULTZ. Because several other families intersect these by marriage, sometimes on multiple occasions, I also have large numbers of BETTENHAUSEN, KOEHLER, KRUSPE, and AULWURM names. For the most part, these families located in northern Illinois and the surrounding states from various German "states". They all emmigrated to the USA in the 19th century. Once here, they very quickly settled in this region. There is no royalty, unusual infamy, or particular fame to be found here. These were all sod-busting farmers, construction trademen, and homemakers. Several have served their communities in elected or appointed positions. In a few cases, relatives-by-marriage go back to the times of the Pilgrims. Only recently have I begun to explore migratory paths and european connections. I have tried to be careful to record sources of information in the form of citations and notes embedded within the working data file. Sometimes this is not possible, as with photographs and images of civil documents. These latter items I maintain in separate electronic directories. Wherever possible, I am trying to digitize information as one step towards archiving this information for succeeding generations. I also believe that sharing and propagating my compilations will futher an archival goal. I don't use this location that often. Rather, I regularly upload my Gedcom to RootsWeb's WorldConnect site. On that site is an index of names so you can perform name searches, build charts, and download mini-GEDs, or my entire file. The link to the RootsWeb site is shown below. To keep my working file manageable, every so often relatives-of-relatives get lopped off. Still, this is quite a large file and difficult to exchange electronically with all the notes and citations. I have more information in PC and paper files than I am able to show on public sites. Please e-mail me if you strike upon a name or lineage you'd like to know more about. Also, if you have old photographs of family members, let me know. They can be displayed with you as the contributor in the caption. My plan is to systematically fill in, as completely as possible, the USA lines before beginning to seriously research their European origins. The information here is from my working research PC file which is continuously being revised. If you notice ommisions or mistakes in a line, please let me know. Other researchers (family members) are collaborating in all eight main surname groups. Without that help, I'd be lost. Information contributons are welcome .... Good hunting! |
