JOHN FOWINKLE (Joannes Vowinkel):
John Fowinkle was born in Nierstein, Germany, Nov. 19, 1834. His German birth name was Joannes Vowinkel. I am his great grandaughter. I have researched the family tree back to John's ggf, Adam Peter Vowinkel, in Nierstein, Germany. John Fowinkle came from Nierstein to America between 1852-1854, first lived in Rhine, Wisconsin before serving in the Civil War. He married Eliza Ellen Butcher, 1865, in Kansas while working on the first transcontinental railway and later lived in Loundes County, MS, as well as Holmes County, MS. They had eight children; Mary Ann, Ann Neida, Henry, John William, Joseph, Susan, Sallie, and Robert. John served with the 13th Missouri/ Ohio Volunteer infantry, 22nd Regiment during the Civil War. Shortly before his death he moved to Sheboygan, WI with his family to be near his brother, Augustus Vowinkel. In 1903 he died of appendicitis and is buried in Wildwood Cemetery in Sheboygan.
His wife, Eliza, later moved to Memphis, TN where she lived with her family until her death in 1921. She is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis.

ELBRIDGE GERRY HOWE:
Elbridge Gerry Howe, born in Kentucky March 28, 1859, is my mother's grandfather. Elbridge descended from John How(e), said to be the first white settler of Sudbury, Massachusetts. Elbridge's father, Jerome Bonapart Howe, was born in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Elbridge's mother, Mary Greene, was born in Boone County, Kentucky. Jerome (J.B.) later moved his family to Tennessee, where he was postmaster in Howesville, TN (now Jeanette, TN). As a young man, Elbridge came to Memphis, TN and worked as a merchant and also was later employed at the old Gayoso Hotel in Memphis. He married Mary Odonell from Maysville, KY. They lived and raised their family of seven children in Memphis. Their children were Jennie, Sara Jane, Arthur, Mary, Loretta (Lottie), Minnie, and Maggie. Mary Odonell Howe died at the age of 38. Elbridge later married a woman named Lola from Arkansas and there is no other information available for her at this time. Elbridge Howe died in 1934 and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, TN.
