| My great great grandfather, Angelin John Vaeth, came to this country from Germany with his brother, John Leopold, around 1854. He was naturalized in 1860, and was a blacksmith by trade. The name was initially spelled Vath when he first arrived in Baltimore. In 1857 Angelin married Kunigunda Heinlein in St. Alphonsus Church in Baltimore City. Two years later John Leopold married Margurite Heinlein, Kunigunda's sister, also at St. Alphonsus. Angelin and Kunigunda had 9 children, the last, Louisa, died in 1876 at the age of 3 months. Tragically, Kunigunda had died the week before. Around 1880, Angelin married a woman he had known for quite some time, Anna Marie Franz Lingner. Anna's husband, Matthew, died in 1878. Angelin Vaeth was the godfather for Anna and Matthew's first son, John Angelin, born in 1863. Angelin and Anna had two children together. Both Angelin and Kunigunda Vaeth were buried at St. Alphonsus Cemetery, but prior to it's closing were removed to Holy Cross Cemetery to a lot owned by their son, Francis. Currently, there are no markers on their graves. Angelin's second wife, Anna, is buried at Holy Redeemer Cemetery. My great grandfather was Angelin's second son, George Francis, who married Maria Sophia Nengel in 1881. Sophia's father, Philip Nengel, came to this country around 1848. He, his wife, Barbara, and their three children lived in Williamsburg, King's County, New York for several years before moving to Baltimore, where they lived on Granby Street and eventually had 4 more children. Philip Nengel was a fresco and caustic painter known for his work in the city, especially at the Eutaw House, Christ Church on Gay Street, and in 1865 for the restoration at the Metropolitan Cathedral (the Basilica), commissioned by Archbishop Spalding. My wife is descended from the Olivers of Charles Co., MD, which we've researched with varying degrees of success from about 1850 but haven't been able to make any earlier connections. There are several Oliver lines in Charles County that we're sure are related, but the link just hasn't been found yet. I am continuing to research the following surnames: VAETH, HEINLEIN, JAECKSCH, LUBKER, NENGEL, RIESETT, STREB, OLIVER AND ULLMANN. |
